ZZR-250 Headlight...its shite

Post by Quick_Stix »

Is the headlight on anyone elses ZZR250 completely useless?? Mines a 95 model and has absolutely no range, and high beam is just crap and fades away to nothing. It basically puts a brighter spot on the road and lights up the sides a bit more. Is it safe to put a higher wattage bulb in? Or will this fry the wiring...Any help is appreciated, cos its not fun doing 100 down an unlit street out here in the bush and you cant really see the edge of the road, and cant see far enough ahead to react properly. Cheers!

I had a '98 ZZR600 with the same problem and I also live in the middle of nowhere.

I replaced the stock 50/55W H4 with a 55/100W, no issues at all for the four years I had the bike after I fitted it..apart from the bulbs blowing once a year or so, not really surprising seeing they had the f#%k vibrated out of them on dirt roads :).

FWIW, I also did the same with the GPX250R I had previous to the ZZR, no issues either...

Mate, may be worth spending a few extra bucks and getting a better quality bulb. Supacheap has jack-shit in the way of good gear, especially in bulbs. I had to drive home in the dark once, wasn't much fun at all  (but I had my wife in the car in front).

I've had Narva, Osram and (I think) Hella in mine, no issues with these bulbs (they last about a year). An el-cheapo from Supacheap lasted three months and wasn't much better than the stock bulb. The Osram had a strange beam pattern and threw a lot of light out to the sides as well as a good beam up the road. I found this quite useful as it illuminated the bush on the side of the road. The Narvas are about the same price.

Alas the headlight in the Hornet is plastic, so I just used a better quality bulb ($35 for a pair!) that are meant to put out more light for the same power...not too bad, but not as good as the 100watter on the ZZR.

HTH, Mick

Excellent thread. I want to upgrade the headlight on my ZZR1100 and was concerned that it may be a drama. I'm off to get a good quality globe. Thanks

+1 to the Osrams

I've replaced mine with an Arctic blue osram from Repco, was under a different brand name though can't remember which

Way better than the poo one that was in there beforehand

I used a Narva 100W item. Difference is absolutely fantastic.

check the wiring harness is specced for that, and if its not put in a higher rating connector, uprated wiring fuse it and use a relay to switch it.

you dont do that your going to seriously burn shit. when i got my bike somoene put a 100w globe in there, awesome light, but the thing wigged out with an intermittent connection, turns out it had melted the connector block as it wasnt rated for the globe. fortunatel the enclosure wasnt damaged and replacing the harness the block and a lower rating globe sorted it out.
