HDMI carries the video and audio signal on 1 cable, so if you get a DVD player with HDMI/Optical OUT for sound (i have) and also run the optical sound cable connection to the amp/ HT speakers then you will have sound out of both TV and sound system speakers..

for *just* sound, optical connection is the best. For combined sound/video, go with HDMI if you can.

But watch the cost of HDMI !!! Monster cable is up around $200+ per *metre* for the top-end stuff (including connections) - its fucking expensive !!!!
