Depends on what you ride. Generally most carby bikes run best on regular unleaded as that's what they're designed to run on. My old baby blade would only run on regular, tried various higher octane stuff and it ran like crap!!
I use premium in my current bike as that's what it's designed to run on, and it's EFI.

SOLD 2000 ZX12R .
We use a Woolworths servo (we have a starcard) and the GPX ran fine on their unleaded. Curiously tho, my car hates it - but it likes BP unleaded.jewjew wrote:I just use standard unleaded, i was told to get my fuel from woolworths servo's because they go through so much fuel with their discounts you can be pretty sure they have good clean fuel.
Having said that, i only use mobil cause i have a mobil card with a good discount on it.

98 octane only in the MFP12, and also the Black Pearl. The Pearl has modified combustion chambers, pistons, intake and exhaust porting, so even though its a 1980 bike, it works *way* better on the Hi-octane stuff. (plus its an EFI bike as well...)
All the other shitheaps run on standard 91, it works the best for them.

yup...i run 98 in the zed, and the old cbr...Mick C wrote:I use high-octane in the 10 because that is what it is designed to take. Like I said in the other thread, the GPX250 doesn't have the compression ratio and timing for high-octane and will run just as well, or most likely better, with regular unleaded.
The old Z650+ has regular in it for that reason.
the ute gets 91 (v6 commy)...
the old cbr use to get 98 plus a dash of "octane booster" for track days, long rides or spirited scratching...

..premium for the 12
usually Mobil or BP stuff
fuel is interesting as a topic
my..aaah computer enhanced V8 Commodore
jumps 8kw at the wheels when i use
premium over the std stuff..but not a kilowatt
more if I use Hi-Octane unleaded
contrast that to 20 years ago
a Torrie I had back about then
made 30 odd hp more at the back wheels
when I used Avgas rather than Super
..leaded of course
smelt beautiful (anyone remember Castrol R..??

and gave me 4 10ths at Calder..to a 12.1
so
gotta be happy with that
cheers

I'm pretty sure ULP is 91RON.Mick C wrote:Nope, the 98 stuff...I took the poll to be referring to Unleaded(93), Premium(95) and High-Octane(98 ). The 10 is designed to take a minimum of 95, so for 98 is playing it safe. It is a much more highly tuned engine than a GPX250 or the Z650+.Stereo wrote:You talking about 100 octane? ....and don't make me pull out my graph of my logs showing fuel economy versus octane rating used
And, I found when I have my GPX250, that the higher the octane, the worse the economy was - 91 was marginally better.

I use 98 mostly, but will stick some 95 in if i'm stuck. 91 in the carby bike is OK at a pinch, but with the EFI bikes I have had, they all pre-ignited madly on anything under 95! The 636 the Hornet and now the BM Trouble U all benefit from running on at least 95, and the BM Trouble you runs much better on the 98 than anything else! It stops it pining it's head off at low revs.
