I agree the Z1000 is lighter, revvier than the ZRX1200, also more nimble. But is it faster?, I am not sure. It certainly is not quicker than a ZRX on the dragstrip! (Both bikes in stock form) Better power to weight goes to the Z1000, higher top speed over the 1/4 by around 9mph. But easy to use always on hand acceleration goes to the ZRX. What gear am I in?, on the ZRX who cares. On a Z1000 you need to be going 8000rpm to access good torque, thats around 80 kph in first gear. This is of course easily fixed by lowering the final gearing. On a ZRX the front wheel is ready for throttle applied lift @ 3500rpm. That is my experience of riding a Z1000 test bike while my ZRX1200 was in for a service.Loz wrote:The Z is lighter, faster, revvier, more fun, great brakes, more of a hooligan. That's the one I'd be going for. I don't have much love for the twin shock retro loaf bikes, they have sensible written all over them. The z1000 looks a bit rude but at least it's not pretending to be from the 70s.
As for "less go than a ZX9" - the Z1000 will beat a ZX-9R up to 200kmh, accorsing to some brit bike mag I saw.
A ZX9 is around 1/2's quicker over the 1/4mile against the Z1000. This is from what I have witnessed from two diffrent ZX9's & two Z1000's.
As for a ZRX being sensible, I am embarresed to admit it is, Tours FULLY loaded, two up ,no worries. Commute to work six days a week, no worries. Sunday rides with the club, no worries. Once a month Drag meeting,LOVE IT.

get a pic of matt chan's kerker equipped zrx up here, THAT will show you sensible........NOT, the thing looks wild.
i was thinking about it last night and it could very well be that my 9 is "not normal" several people have commented on it, tex o'grady at the dyno day was "surprised - a good figure for one of those" were hios words. whenb i told him it had - at that stage 106K on it he walked away shaking his head. i hadnt mentioned that it was still on the original clutch at that stage
when i piked it up from getting the smash repair done from the roo incident the guys commented that the test ride dude couldnt belive how much grunt it had...........and he rides just about everything, he told john it had just as much as his 05 fairyblade cbr1000......
i rode it this morning and its not shy, especially after i've been zrx mounted 3 times this week - yes it doest need a few more revs but it also revs higher and harder.
the z1000 i rode only had 800k's on the clock, that may have had summat to do with it - must swap with the wattster next time he joins us in the backyard for a jaunt........
basically, zrx's are NOT sensible, zx9's are bloody great and the z1000 is a combination od both.

I've ridden the ZRX1100 and it was great, but felt a bit heavy. Unofrutnately haven't ridden the 1200 or a Zed of any description.
Common sense tells me the Z if you like clicking through the gears, or the ZRX for a more sensible ride on the torque wave.
Given the way my riding has developed I'd go the ZRX... the Z looks to me like it wants to be flogged, and I don't need any encouragement

From every report and Dyno run I have seen, it would be fair to say that the Z1000 and the ZX9R are probably pretty equal in terms of power. Most sheets I have seen, seem to average out about the same for both. The 9 is lighter however so if gearing was the same one could naturally assume that the 9 has the advantage. Add ram air, and you have a little more top end advantage. (pretty much from 160kph on the ram air is passively supercharging the airbox.)
Now I have ridden both a ZX9 and a ZRX1200 up reefton spur. The ZRX was OK up to a point. This point was pretty much about the point where you have to start using a little body english on the 9 and not too much effort! Whereas at this pace the ZRX was frame flexing and wobbling all over the place. The one I rode was well wet up, but a Steel spine frame can't compete with a modern alloy beam cast, extruded, pressed and welded jobbie!
Engine wise the ZRX is probably one of the nicest big motors to ride with on the road. Torque and power was only a gentle roll of the wrist away and power was linear pretty much till run out of puff time at about 8000rpm. It made for a relaxing ride. But ground clearance is even worse than on a Z and nowhere near a 9! So it only takes two or three turns and the ZRX pilot is starting to have to wrestle it about like a proper Superbike of the 80's!
The brakes are great too! Ride Possie on the ZRX is awesome as is the Z for that matter, and for a sports bike the 9 cuts it just too. (Mind you a trip away on the beemer sure made the 9 seam little, cramped, hunched, nervous and twitchy, amazing what comparisons do.....)
If I were looking at these two bikes it would be hard to decide I reckon. The old school looks of the ELR ZRX1200 really appeal to a dinosaur of my ilk, but the Z has more modern Frame, Engine, Brakes, steeper geometry and more ground clearance as well as modern streetfighteresque looks. mmmmm It's a tough one, but the Z1000 would probably get my money if it was solo riding, but if a pillion were to be carried with any sort of regularity or distance, then I would definately opt for the ZRX!
I suppose the other real issue is what is available at what price when you are ready to buy too! That was small part of the decision to by that shitbox gearbox exploding BMW. It was on the market, it had the attributes I wanted in a tourer of shaft and panniers as min requirement and the price was right! Luckily the price was right enough to allow for the above mentioned exploding gearbox and still be happy!
