My bike has a switch to manually turn on the fans which is electric taped to the handle bars (above key barrel). It isn't really a issue if I remember to switch it on when I go for a ride and off when I park. However, I have learned the hard way in both situations i.e. bike was overheating after riding for 10mins. Started fine on neutral but kept dying when I went in 1st. Took me a while (and burning smell) to work out it was the fan switch. Also drained my battery to zilch when I forgot to turn fan switch off before going for a coffee.
However, it is kinda useful when warming up the engine to not have the fans on.
Someone told me the previous owner might have just installed a dodgey fan switch instead of fixing the problem with the thermalstat (or something like that). How much would it cost to get fixed? Is it worth while?

I had the same issue on my GPX250 - had a switch for the fan when I got it.
I didn't think that the above two options were realistic though - thought the thermostat and switch were actually part of the radiator, not replaceable individually, and required a whole new radiator to fix.
Hence I never bothered - got into the habit of turning the fan on when the bike was started and turning it off when I turned off the bike.
