Where to get a frame checked? Is it officially written off?

Post by Paulie »

Hey all, just a quick question. I had my bike assessed independantly for me letter of demand, I have 3rd party property insurance. The dude wrote:

"total loss as repair would be uneconomical'

Then down the bottom it says "Assessment: Vehicle not repairable" and beside that is says "Write off Vehicle advice: NSW"

Does this mean that the bike has been 'written off" or just the dude is advicing that it should be written off?

The reason I ask is cause I realy loved the bike and wouldnt mind fixing her back up... I know she needs alot of work (as per the semi hit my bike post) but I dunno, I think I coulod make her into a street fighter or something. Is there a place where u can go to get a frame checked out? The back half of the frame is crap (under the seat part around there-but that isnt structural??). and there is a graze on the frame sort of under the tank but it doesnt look bent??

Any help??

A 30-tonne semi-trailer ran over it. I wouldn't trust it.

It'll end up a Stat write off due to the "grazing" on the frame.
One thing with insurance mate -
IF there is any possibility that they do not write it off due to a frame "mark" and allow you to put it back on the road and the frame fails then the insurance co is deemed liable
Thats why there's so many relatively undamaged stat write offs at the auction

Buy a new bike....

From what I can gether the bloke doesn't have full comp on the bike hence fixing it might be the better option.. if you were in Vic i'd suggest take it to Bob Martin in ferntree Gully, they do a veritable shitload of frame repairs daily, bends, cracks etc etc, given you're not might be worth a phone call to see if they have a NSW or whatever state you live) equivalent, bike market is fairly small so fairly intimate and everyone knows everyone in a roundabout way.

Your call but no harm in trying I reckon, failing that, get a new bike, 30 ton semis can make a nasty mess of many things, bikes included.
A good mate will bail you out of jail, a true mate will be sitting in the cell next to you saying "Damn, we fucked up!!!"
