Black Spur heads up
Pinched from the MRA forum..
VicRoads is seeking your feedback on a possible reduction in the speed
limit on Maroondah Hwy between Healesville and Narbethong from 100km/h
to 80km/h.
From 2001 to 2005, there were 86 casualty crashes on this 19km stretch
of Maroondah Highway. A number of road safety initiatives have been
implemented during this time including resurfacing much of the highway,
improved curve and speed advisory signage, improved line marking and the
installation of a vehicle speed activated warning sign. However, more
road safety measures are needed to address the high incidence of crashes
and VicRoads has been investigating other ways to reduce the number of
crashes.
Reducing speed limits is a demonstrated way to improve road safety. As
a comparison on a physically similar road, the Great Ocean Road was
reduced to 80km/h and the result was a 42% reduction in serious injury
crashes.
This consultation process will involve local residents, businesses,
Murrindindi Shire Council, Yarra Ranges Shire Council, RACV, Victorian
Motorcycle Advisory Council and Victoria Police. Responses will be
taken into consideration to finalise future road safety proposals.
Please forward your feedback by Thursday 5 April 2007. All responses
will be treated anonymously. Email or posted responses are accepted.

Only reason GOR road toll went down was coz when the speed limit was dropped, everybody just went to the black spur. Drop the Spur limit there will be less at the spur and more on the gor again.
Reefton anyone?

Kids are BMX racing this weekend, I'm flag waving. Have ridden the bike a couple of times, but shoulder is far from being 100%. I'll be riding to Halls Gap though.

Only Marysville business owners will really care.
Plenty more roads elsewhere if this goes ahead but the many hundreds of bike riding/performance car driving customers of Marysville, Narbethong and Buxton businesses might go missing.
On the subject Ive had lots of non riding people ask me about WTF goes on at the Black Spur - why do bikes ride it at ridiculous speeds?
It IS gonna happen folks, the Black Spur has become every sports bike riders public track (not excepting me BTW) and pollies like the easy fix.
Man I get shafted with track closures and continual loss of forest access dirt riding and this type of thing road riding. HTF are you supposed to have a good time in 2007?
Funnily enough the Reefton is a more dangerous road but less public so no action.

Just one more law and everyone will be safe.

I have only done the Black Spur once, it was *OK*, but I think it is way overated. Far too much traffic, trucks etc etc. Its a great surface no worries, it has nicely radiused corners, better than most roads I have ridden on.......it also has an endless successsion of other vehicles all using it from dawn to dusk, at slow to very slow speed............and this takes away all the benefits of the surface and the good corners imho.balanse wrote:.....Funnily enough the Reefton is a more dangerous road but less public so no action.
As far as *real* roads are concerned (ie high speed + good corners + little to no traffic), the Reefton shits all over the Black...........imho.....

When the corners are posted at 15-40kph, how high does the speed limit need to be? The fun of these roads is in the cornering, and even if you push the double plus 20 rule that barely gives you 100kph. It's the dickheads that think they have to do 200kph on every straight that cause the issue, and are probably the ones who end up in the morgue.
