so on so forth, yeah its about scooters in the opening lines, but it does make reference to bike parking problems in the cbd and the growth of bike sales in oz.TIM MURRAY was sick of sitting in traffic jams, spending a fortune on petrol and feeling guilty about the environment. So, like hundreds of Sydneysiders, he decided to buy a scooter.
For three years, he has parked in an area behind the footpath on Kent Street. Dozens of riders have joined him. There were no signs saying they couldn't park there, and no one had complained.
But last week, without warning, City of Sydney rangers slapped a $77 fine on every bike in the area.

Hopefully this might spark something. There are so many bits like that in the city where bikes could park quite sensibly and out of the way. I drove my car in yesterday but if I could park on the footpath close to where I was going I would have ridden in.

We've had it since last century [20th] NSW needs to join the real world on bike parking

I agree NSW Govenment should wake up to them selves.

If you approach your local Council with support from the local MRA branch, things might happen with bike parking in the CBD. But it needs people to push the issue, identify the areas where bikes/scooters etc can park without obstructing pedestrians (just like in the story today), and have the council sign-post the area as Motorcycle Only parking zones.
I did this about 8 years ago in the Parliamentary triangle ( run by a Commonwealth authority), when the carpark at the front of our building was being upgraded. A couple of phone calls determined that there was *NIL* thought being given to m/c parking........
- so after a few more calls, a submission to the relevant authority, and a few more calls when they stuffed the original plan, bingo, we had 2 car spots right at the front of the building signposted for 8 bikes. Its that easy.
They even came back during the first summer, when all the bikes started digging sidestands into really hot, soft tar..............and replaced the centre section with a concrete slab 1 metre wide, specifically for sidestands !!!
Get onto your local MRA, make the calls, keep up the pressure, and you *can* make a difference.

Oh ok, that kinda clears it up. The place i had in mind was either maybe here on clarence st just north of the "ist" in "Distrubutor" (closer pic here) or more likely here on erskine street underneath the Freeway 4. But then again i think Syd City council managed a minor miracle and designated the latter official parking sometime recently.
