Economics editor eh? :?
And there I was thinking it was just some ignorant, half-wit, low-paid journalist who finally got sick of his cramped, cockroach infested, basement office and decided to up his profile by using this cheap stunt to raise some controversy ... all in the hope that he may one day get laid sad1.gif
Sounds like I was just about spot-on

Thanks Yoda! I hope between all of those organisations, and the resulting public outcry, we can do something about this kind of negative, misinformed rubbish and get this guy to pull his head in.

...spot whose getting frustrated at not being able to ride his bike, I've got a fuse about this - long at the moment

Yeah, I was being very careful about the wording. If you get too abusive they'll just get all defensive and you get nowhere. Take the high ground and they have to at least attempt to respond in a civil manner.

And what if we already own cars??? If I had to sell my bike, that would buy a lot of "Supercharger" for my ute....

IIRC, it's in the order of ~70% of multiple vehicle accidents involving motorcycles are the fault of the car driver. But that's just from memory. There's a higher proportion of single-vehicle accidents also - but IMO, you play, you pay. No reason to try to "tax them off the road."

Just sent them this:

"In reference to your article "Newspaper calls for motorcycles to be taxed off the road" - firstly, I didn't realise it was the role of the Financial Review to provide social commentary on transport issues. This is not your area of expertise, as shown by the writer's incredibly uninformed, generalised summary of the issue. The figures quoted were misleading in that they did not take into account the proportion of bike riders to car drivers, making the figures appear to support the writer's bias.

What's particularly disappointing are comments like: "Unfortunately, people forget, and motorcycles and motor scooters have come back into fashion, including among middle-aged men, who should know better. " I am 25 years old, yet even I took offence to this narrow-minded, condescending judgement on a sector of the riding community who are informed and experienced well beyond my years.

Another example of the writer's bias and poorly researched opinion is this comment: "It is possible that people attracted to the speed and excitement of motorcycle riding will be accident prone in any form of transport. But their risks of serious injury, permanent disability and death would be lower in a car, and so would the cost to the community." The awe motorcyclist's have for the machinery they ride is only translated into careless, immature "hoon" behaviour by a very small minority of riders. Riders are very social in their pastime and all can attest to this fact truthfully and are quite happy to admit that yes, there are a very small number who tarnish the reputation of the whole. Stupidly, the writer has forgotten to assume that people attracted to the speed and excitement of motorcycle riding would be far braver in the protective shell of their car and more likely to have/cause accidents than other drivers. Why doesn't he now write an article suggesting that people who've had several accidents in cars be taxed off the roads??

Perhaps when choosing to publish articles that supposedly reflect the views of the publisher, it would be best to fully research the subject and present the views of all parties involved."
Hayden who??

What a prize prick, as if Joe public wasn't prejudice enough against motorcycles , a knob jockey like this, who in all honesty has never sat on a bike, let alone own one, comes along and tries to cast opinions on things he knows jack shit about. :x
Sorry but it makes me so crazy.

Mick takes note....

Do NOT Piss off Bobbi... hahahaha 8)

Well written youngin.. your wording would reflect the majority of us I'd say... Well Done.

Tho I must say, some of us would have used expletives... But I as a person who has to attend to Consumer complaints on a daily basis knows, that a well written and decisive and precicely written letter is far more likely to get attention than just saying... Ya talk Shite Wanker... lol

Again well said Bobbi

OOPS sorry also well done Mick and Ian
