Sorry Strika been away and not posting.
I LOVE wheelies and flipped many a dirt bike and I can say the trick (for mere mortals) on the road is POWER.
We are not talking balance point wheelies like the stunters do where they pop it up and then balance it down the track with it either in nuetral or with the clutch in now THAT is impressive.
I am talking pop up monos. Near the end of its short and exciting life (is there a correlation there?) I was able to pop the 12 up at 140+ and then accelerate through to (dont know to scared to look) all in controlled conditions of course. This was built up to of course, I didnt just start pulling 140k monos

.
Like you say it is MOST impressive when you come up beside a mate look over then pop the sucker up and mono away (sigh). When you BOTH do it and mono away from everyone
else it downright sublime.
My best was ummm "speed testing" the 12 after its dyno and was totally unexpected but I wasnt in a position to roll off either, it was very (very) fast and went a long way but was only for a second or two
What I think you are talking about it going for long distances and maybe even going up a gear or two (which puts a LOT of strain on the box). The 7 used to be good to pull up in 1st or second and thru to 3rd or 4th. The 12 didnt give a shit as long as it had anywhere from 2grand on the tacho up to 3rd gear and (when pulling up at higher speeds while travelling) about 8grand on the dial (we are talking 100k + here). The Darmah wont even think about, no matter what gear or what revs
Two ways I know of, all to do with where the motor starts REALLY working. On the 7 AND the 12 this was about 8 grand on the dial, then either roll off and on (as Stereo said to load the front) and the other to clutch it a bit, I am guessing this is where the term "popping" a wheelie comes from. Dont REEF the bars it is more of a
letting it come up thing. Also dont pull the clutch all the way in and let it all the way out, control is the key here, you will get a "feel" for it. The 7 also liked it at about 4500rpm too so there was probably a step there. The 12 did it in any gear at any rev you just clutched it a bit, mind you it was also SPINNING when it did it as many friends have attested (and yes I AM an idiot) and the 12 in particular SPAT rocks so make sure there is no one behind you either

.
The big hurdle is actually LETTING the front come up, ANYTHING (within reason) will wheelstand but most of us (intelligently) roll off or dont roll on so hard. Once you overcome this natural survival instinct it is easy. You will find the more you practice the easier it is. NEVER think how good you look, concentrate on what you are doing, in this case pride DEFINITELY goeth before a fall (or leads to it). Only do it for YOU not anyone else (if you get my drift).
I would also agree with the not hitting the back brake unless ABSOLUTELY necessary as it slams down pretty hard and creates its own problems, BUT keep in mind that if the wind gets you (which it does at high speed you actually FEEL the wind holding you up

but we are talking 140+ ) pulling the cluth in a bit doesnt work too good at those speeds either, also do not roll off too quick to come back down, rather let the speed catch up to the mono and it comes down smooth, in other words just stop accelerating and let it catch up. You do NOT want a tank slapper after a mono either so make sure its all straight
I almost the flipped that 12 at an estiamted 180 and as I rolled off hard the resulting shake was even better to behold (apparently) for me it was just a terrifying OH SHIT moment, and I was DAMN glad it was a 12 and not a 10.
Monos is one of the reasons I bought my 12 over a 10, a ten is easier but does it when IT wants rather than I want and the 12 is SO controlled over the entire course of it epecially when putting it down due ot its length and I guess sterring head angle (anyone?).
Like Smitty said the 14 laughs at monos too, I actually HAD to roll off the sucker so it would go down (a bit like sex really). this was up in 2nd on the throttle and through 3rd and 4th gears and yes the sucker WAS flying by this point... smooth as but.
So my advice is POWER and WAY too much of it and a long bike so it doesnt get TOO scary and shakey. I never got into the one footed stand up stuff but (although I did a couple in public and prcaticed a fair bit) it is the same thing of overcoming you fear of it more than anything. Once you have done it a few times it gets easier and easer.
I know you will but make sure there are NO side roads where you practice. You do NOT want to slam into farmer Jones in his 4WD.
At some point it may also pay you to ask WHY you want to do it
