These big hypersports bikes are not the best for doing wheelies. Well yeah they easily get of the ground, but when they come down they break things. Just ask The Brick..ross79 wrote:I'm still waiting for some useful info. I'd like to learn how to wheelie, but would have to buy another bike to practice on. Spent enough time playing with the suspension on the 12 to make sure the front wheel stays on the ground!

Strika your 9 is identical to mine. Standard gearing, aftermarket pipe and airfilter assumed ( hp + or - 5hp). Straight quite road 2nd 6000 to 7000 rpm, pull clutch - but not completely just slip it until revs rise to 9500 - 10000 then release smooth and quickly while rolling on more throttle. the front will rise just like it does in first gear on the throttle - not violently just smooth and progressive. As it does lift keep your nerve and be smooth on the throttle, if it kind of just hovers at a small height "twitch"* the throttle and it will rise, this can be done in steps to raise the front up to the required height. Keep looking straight ahead at a distant object. All too scary and it feels like its going to flip close the throttle - bloody good chance you are nowhere near the balance point and so rear brake covering is kind of pointless unless you want to slam your newly rebuilt suspension into the ground.
* I dont like the the term snap so this seemed better. My best description of is exactly this - quickly give the throttle 1/8 turn and return to the original position
Disclaimer: I have only ever performed this in a controlled environment.

I got a sweater for my birthday. I realy wanted a moaner or a screamer.

I am no good at them but the bike does it all by itself on more than a few occasions just use a few extra revs in first and it gets all light and you can feel if you land it a bit off line.
I am not a clutch abuser although many stunters will feel otherwise about this so for me to have a decent go i would need more ccs for power wheelies I can see clutch ups ending in tears.

If I rode my bike at the speed of light, what would happen when I switched on its headlights?

The infamous superbike google video. This vid is really good if ur new to the wheelie world. Dave demonstrates power and slipping the clutch wheelies, on a 03/04 zx6r no less.
I felt learning how to wheelie was important to me - you know, being a better rider, confidence and control thing under all sorts of situations and conditions blah blah blah, including on the back wheel. So I forced myself to learn how to do power wheelies on my zx6r a while ago. The first time I got a decent height tho I paniced and chopped the throttle - and hammered my nuts and wrists. That first wheelie tho really broke a barrier for me. I agree with what dave says in the google video, your first (intentional) wheelie is like going over a rollercoaster with that sickness feeling in your stomach, but once you've experienced what the bikes feels like with a light front end, its alot easier to do it again.
You can read all you want about how to wheelie, but it's something u have to learn by doing. Good luck to ya!

Actually the trick is to manually preload the front..... Just before starting your wheelie, allow the front suspension to compress... and then wham.... open the throttle... the other way to do it depending on which bike you have is to unload the front and THEN suddenly accelerate.... this is much tougher and you will end up going much faster than the other way...varden wrote:having your bike set up with loads of rear preload would prolly help, when i set the sag to 40mm on my 636 it's desire to power wheelie dissapeared. :evil
Same with my old 9 too, set susp and the wheelies dried up.
The RF900 was good for em tho...not that i was.

I started practicing over the last few days and have done a few OK ones
. Just now trying to click 2nd! Havn't managed to keep it going in 2nd yet, but first up clutch wheelies are there now. Holding the balance point still needs to be mastered!!!!

There are really only two questions in life. 1.Which way do i go? 2.What is the lap record?

Cheat and do it the stunters way by running 20psi in the tyres, setting the idle at 4000rpm and putting a 60 tooth rear sprocket on.

Stay on the gas...maybe you'll save it, maybe you won't, but at least it will end the suspense....
