Need advice on buying a 600 on P restrictions!

Well, Thank you every one for you help and suggestions. As of yesturday i am the owner of a 2002 Yamaha YZF-R6 for 7000 in perfect condition and shes absolutly beautiful. So far I have ridden it to get a RWC which was today (where the mechanic offered me 7500 for it) and im picking it up tomorrow where it will be storred for 10 months until I get my full license. (hopefully i wont get pulled over tomorrow) And as for the massive temptation, Im giving the key for disc lock to my mother so i wont be able to touch it. Thank you all and safe riding. and I will be arranging a ride once I am riding next year.

In spite of all the advice to the contrary, you go for the worst value-for-money option out of the three you've listed, and all of it just so it can sit and rot for almost a year.

Start saving up for the oil, filter, fuel and set of tyres you're going to need for when you pull it out of mothballs...

Honestly, if this mechanic is serious about giving you $500 more than you paid for it, take it.

umm if its gunna sit in the garage for 10months there a whole bunch of stuff ushould do so it doesnt turn to shit (lift tyres off ground, drain fuel, disco battery, put fresh oil in)..i think theres a stroage guide here sumwhere, or in the owners manual...

alternatively, get a mate to ride it once a week for 20min or so...

starting the bike once a week wont suffice...

We don't have LAMS either, and if I can't get an exemption I'll just sell the 250 and sit on my licence for a year. I can't see me wanting to ride it once I get my P's and I think it's really stupid to have a bike sitting in the shed losing value.

The last time something like this happened, i helped a mate in qld test out a R6 here in Sydney, he got it shipped up, put in storage (abeit was only to be for 3-4 months). Then got suspended for riding like a retard on his cbr250 and then went and ended up selling the R6 for what he paid for it.

I woulda suggested if you didnt get a loan on the 600 and used ALL your own cash, you should have put the money into an ING account, you would have gotten near on $250 in interest alone (not taking compounding into account) on it.

But still dude, your not doing yourelf or the bike any favours by buying it an storing it on near a year. Go to a US site like gixxer.com or motorcycle journal and look up "winter bike storage", a lot of countries have 6 months a year you can ride in, if not less.

i gotta laugh cos i kno a kid over here who paid $3k for a early cbr900...while he had 12 months to go on his P's.... lost his licence and abt 3 months ago Greeny and Plas (with me and the other kid) parted up the cbr900 cos it was fuked from sitting under a sheet for 8 months...

the tyres werent salvageable, the oil, chain, sprockets etc are stuffed...

i too would sell it at a $500 profit... then put the money into a 6% account (i had $2k in it and it made me abt $50 a month??)...so over the 12 months if u saved that $7k ud have enuf for a new lid ...

Yeah I am feeling a bit dumb right now. I kinda got sucked in by the price, bummer. I do have a trailor and was planning for some track days. But ive now decided to put it on the market for a month and see what happens because im quite confident i wont lose a dime because the bike is in amazing condition, and i have already had two offers. Yeah i know im an idiot but ive learnt from my mistake, really sad though because shes so easy and nice to ride.

Anyone have an idea on what i should list it for, Ive been looking around and they are going for 7800 - 8800 on bikesales, trading post and bikepoint, and i had it values for 7500 - 8500, but it is in perfect condition.

ask 8.5k neg, that gives you breathing room and if you sell it above 7.2k (inc rego transfer costs etc) you've made a profit . Anyone half interested/serious will take a look as like you said. They may be hagglers, or willing to pay more.

Remember most importantly, as a buyer you haggle the price down not up . So asking a touch too much as a seller is far better than asking bang on what your after, just remember to set a hard limit on what your willing to drop to, but dont be as willing to give up and go straight to it like a virgin at prom night, if you get my drift.

Yeah i was thinking that exactly, It is honestly perfect, has 10 months reg and ill have the road worthy certificate tomorrow so ill list it then. I was just having a look then and people are asking 9000 for the same but more k's so im not too stressed.
Oh and ive been with a virgin on prom night its not as easy as it looks, , but i get what you mean.

I was thinking that too but was worried it was a little high but ill put 8800 ono. If it doesnt sell by april, ill just take it to the track once a month, im not too concerned about any depreciation because it will still be valued higher than what i paid. And ill have an amazing ride once i do get my license.

One negative about the bike is the fact that, at full turn the grips jam my hands to the tank, are all bigger bikes like this?

Bike valuations aren't like house valuations; they're issued with one hand relieving a nutsack itch... they don't mean shit.

Consider the following... brand-new 600's, which, without word of exaggeration, piss all over the three-model-updates-old thing you just bought, can be had for $13,000 with minimal bargaining.

There's a bloke on here getting nowhere with his attempts to unload a six-month-old ZX-6R with fuck-all kms on it for $10,000. His bike is five years newer than yours, has less than a quarter of the kms on it, it makes some 15hp more, it has higher-spec suspension and braking components and it's some 6% lighter.

That's worth a lot more than $1500 extra.

If I was looking at a first-generation R6, I'd set my ceiling at six grand, and I'd be going as low as $4500 for the now eight-year-old '99 models.

If you get out of this without taking a bath to the tune of a couple of grand between the stamp duty on rego transfer and what you'll lose between your buying price and sale price, it'll be an expensive, sorely-needed lesson not taught to you.
