Shell Oil

Post by KLR »

For my 6000 service I am going to try Shell Oil. Whilst for some this may sound like blasphomy for some of you and are wondering why I am not going Motul 5100?

Last time they put it in my 9 my gearbox felt like shite. And dont want my 6 feeling the same, I know every bike is different but am going to try different oils and see what suits me. Then at 9000 will chop to another when I change just the oil ( thats if I still have the 6!!   )

Here is the link to the Shell Motorcycle Oil info page, tells me what you thinks and if any of you have had a bad experience using Shell.

I know there is probably another topic on this subject but I am lazy.

Dont know whether to go the Ultra 4 or VSX4 and what the price comparisons are on the Shell vs Motul etc etc any input would be appreciated.

My ZZR has Motul 5100 in at the moment. Seems ok.

My old Honda VF500F has Shell oil in, and loves it. Gearbox is smooove. It's never had the Motul in it, though, so I can't give a direct comparison. Wierd bike, though - it even loves Optimax!

i used mobil the first time and every other time i used motul and the bike seems more responsive and sounds nicer. To me it sounds deeper using the motul than the mobil, but i could be tripping.

I've used shell in my zx7r for 5 years and my 9 for 2 years and had no problems with it. I used the Ultra full synthetic which is bloody good value for the $ if you ask me..
One thing I have been told is not to swap oil brands / types too much as your bike does get used to running them.... dunno how true this is but I had trouble with my 9 when I changed the brand once...

i've always used Shell VSX4 in the GPX never an issue, always felt good for around 5000km, changed recently to motul 5100 went ok for the first 3000km then a pocket full of false nuetrals and clutch feels like shyte.

Maybe its gossip rumour started by the oil companies so you stay brand loyal. I for the life of me cannot understand why that would be the case, as long as the viscosity etc is the same the motor should not know any difference.

Just a thought

I was told this by Dave "Radar" Cullen and it was after he had checked and tuned my bike... Funnily enough he knew I had been changing oil types after checking the top end of the motor.

I used some cheaper stuff and it caused a build of sludge..

Whilst not an oil response (I use Mobil 1) the dealership that I bought my new bike from recommended that I should not use Shell Optimax as a fuel. Pretty weird as he could not back this up with any data or technical reason, just said that many had fuel related problems.
Any thoughts or experiences out there?

mate mate mate....there was a huge thread sumwhere on optimax (whos got the link??) ...i think its sumthin to do with the additives that fark ur motor..i ran it in EFI bikes, tho they dont recomend it in carbed bikes...also in SA they cant sell it becoz of the additives, so they have a premium over here...
in general, bikes (most) run shit on it..sum ppl love it on here, most of us hate it!!

I use motul 5100. It has a gearbox additive that does seem to go off at around 3-4000kms, indicated by a noticable difference in gearbox smoothness. I usually change my oil at 3000kms anyway.

Shell synthetic does seem to be good value, but I guess I am just faithful to the old 5100, been using it for 8 or so years and it has never let me down.
