Yep thats lucky... my mate was carting someone around without a helmet and they got pulled over, only got a warning! no fines, no nothing.

I just read this whole thing for the first time...

I wont preach about what's right and wrong, I just hope HP understands how lucky he was in this instance and takes steps to not find himself in a similar situation down the track...

I think there is a simple moral to this story, and regardless of points/penalties, loss of licence, HD or anything else... you only get one life, is it really worth risking it this much?

Always ride sober, always within your limits and obey most road rules (esp the ones that control conflict of traffic flow - lights, u-turns etc).

I've seen my fair share of drink drivers. Whenever we set up RBT sites it's not uncommon to get between 5 and 15 who are a fair way over the limit within a 2 hour period.

The blokes I work with have a saying seems to get a fair bit of use at the RBT sites these days.

"And we share the road with these fuckwits!!"

i think most of us have driven or riden when we probably shouldn't have. The point is for those of us that have got away with it, good. Learn from your mistakes. The next time we may not get away with it and the getting of light option is loss of licence. The worse case is injuring (if not killing) an innocent person.

Nothing to brag about really is it.

There are reasons why people have restricted bike licenses ... believe it or not. It's not like I *couldn't* have bought a 600 by now and gone and pulled some massive mono's or something, but it actually *has* taken a few stacks and mishaps on the 250 for me to figure out that riding a motorbike on the road is an extremely high risk activity and that you have to have a really good attitude and mindset towards riding *responsibly*. That means, taking the time to learn more about the basic skills of motorcycle riding, spending time making sure you know as much as you can mechanically about the bike and the risk factors in accidents (for example, not checking your tyre pressure for a couple of weeks and riding on a 26psi front), learning about riding defensively and risk management and last, but not least, the performance capability of the bike.

I'm glad i didn't get a 600cc sportsbike or bigger straight away when i had my restricted license (and didn't have to wear an L plate). If I had been able to push real sportsbike as far as I occasionally tried to on the 250, i would've come very unstuck had anything unexpected happened ... and i'd be dead. I now know that I need to keep my psychotic riding to the race track, and just take things nice and casually on the roads and never go 9 or 10/10ths out on a hills run.

For some people (and it would seem like you and me included) these lessons are only learnt the hard way through time.

Get a smaller bike

Well, actually, that's what I'm going to tell you. Coppers are like everyone else. We eat, drink, sleep and shit. Some like to go out after work with mates and have a drink or two, just like the majority of Australians. I would not describe this as substantial alcohol abuse.

There have been the odd one or two who have been caught drink driving, and like I said before:
"We share the road with these fuckwits."

That was hardly my point. My point was:
I probably see more than my fair share of drink drivers, and we share the road with these fuckwits who put their lives, and the lives of others at risk. I don't believe I said that Police are exempt from acting like fuckwits.

However, I can tell you this.... none of the blokes I work with drink and drive/ride.
