The police report on the incident below.

9 February 2007
0100 hours

POLICE INVESTIGATE ROAD RAGE INCIDENT

One man has been arrested and a bus driver is in hospital tonight, as police investigate a severe case of road rage in South Melbourne.

Police believe the incident occurred at around 10.50pm when it is alleged a bus accidentally cut off two motorcyclists near the intersection of City Road and Market Street in South Melbourne.

In retaliation, the motorcycle riders surrounded the bus when it was stopped at a red light. One motorcycle was in front of the bus at the time.

The bus then drove forward, dragging the motorcycle- minus the rider- for a few hundred metres.

When the bus came to a stop, it is alleged one of the riders began smashing the door and windscreen of the bus and assaulting the driver.

The dragged bike caught fire but was soon put out by one of the men who took a fire extinguisher from a nearby service station.

The three passengers on the commuter bus were not injured and later transferred to another bus.

Police have arrested one man for assault and criminal damage and he is currently being interviewed in St Kilda.

The second rider has been released pending enquiries.

The bus driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries and may face possible driving charges.

Police are hoping to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision. Witnesses can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

HTFU and get on with the riding.

i reckon youd change your mind on that if ya ever get run off the road by one

I doubt it. I drive them. An 18000 kg GVM Scania to be precise. I know exactly what they are capable of and exactly what they need in the way of road space.

I also happen to have driven express services in Brisbane peak hour traffic. I can fit a 4.1m wide vehicle down a 4.2m wide lane at 50 kmh.

So I know exactly what an Urban Heavy Transit driver goes through on a daily basis, and exactly how poorly paid they are for the responsibility.

As I said, get on with the riding and leave the idiocy to the cagers. There's surely enough of them out there without adding bikers to it.

Dont most busses have right of way?? and a big "give way" sign on them??

shouldnt riders be aware that buses may pull out and be ready in case?? or is it just me??
I think they do have the right of way, and I think, in this case, the bus driver drove over the bike not out of spite, but out of pure fear of what actually eventually happened. Which isnt entirely unreasonable, not that I agree with it.

However, bus drivers do take their "right of way" to an entirely new level.

My story:

I was in Brisbane a couple weeks ago. There is an absurd intersection near the Casino at the end of Queen Street Mall and on the front of the Brisbane river which has about 5 streets coming into one intersection, one of which is a bus lane which goes underground.

My boyfriend and I were waiting at the pedestrian crossing to walk across in front of the entrance to the bus underground thingo.

We waited.
The little green man appeared.
I proceeded to walk across the crossing like any person would after seeing the little green man.

My boyfriend GRABBED me and yanked me back JUST as a bus screamed past my nose. I dont even know where it came from, but it wasn't paying any attention to the red light or the pedestrians crossing! It went through an obvious red light and would have completely cleaned me up if my boyfriend hadn't grabbed me.

They would have had to scrape me off the road, because I was not expecting it and would have definitely just walked straight out in front of it.

Perhaps buses running reds through pedestrian crossings and ignoring the fact that pedestrians have the ultimate right of way is normal in Brisbane, but it definitely isn't in Adelaide!

I cant believe the speculation. I know the riders and they arent nerdriders. Nerdriders are spineless  The bus had pulled out infront of them without indicating and caused one of my mates to hit the rear of the bus. They then went to TRY and stop the bus to see what was going on. He clipped friend 2 . Friend 2 slaps him. Bus driver then runs over friend 3 who now has a broken leg. Get the facts before u make rediculas comments

they didn't say anything about a broken leg in the news, did they ? in fact they said the bike that got run over was rider-less ! But i reckon there must have been a good reason for their behaviour, cause most people wouldn't carry on like that without a good reason ?

There are always 3 sides to every story..........Yours, Theirs, and somewhere, lurking near the middle is.............The Truth.

Without actually witnessing the incident, or knowing the riders personally, it is amazing that so many opinions about *what really happened* can be posted here  :?

I think al9, who *may* just have a better handle on what actually transpired the other night, has raised a very good point. Facts talk, and bullshit walks........

the stories we got werent very detailed....we heard 2 or 3 accounts from different articles...the long and the short of it is that those who agreed with wot ur mates did got bagged..those who didnt agree got bagged...every1 has an opinion.... i hope the truth comes out and the bloke who was in the wrong cops a caning...

i agree with duane, jase and jess .... (its a nice sounding 3some)`anyway.... the poor guy is doing his job and some people are of the attitude that cabbies and bus drivers are there for to be abused.

I drive a 2 tonner van everynow and then, u know how hard it is to see around. Imagine a bus, its not the easiest thing to drive.

Lucky i wasn't the bus driver, guess which fooker would of been in hospital, instead some old woggy bus driver carnt go home to his family cos of some cock head rider who thinks he's tough.

99% of bike riders break the rules most of the time, this guy does it once (by not giving way) and is that a fair punishment. I dont think so.

Most people should remember that they aren't the toughest in the world. like i said lucky i wasn't the bus driver. the families would of buried the bikes and the riders.
