There is a victims of crime compensation thing but NFI how you access it. I thought about it when my car got broken into at Broadmeadows and $1800 hearing aids stolen amongst other things but in the end couldn't be farked.
A good mate will bail you out of jail, a true mate will be sitting in the cell next to you saying "Damn, we fucked up!!!"

I've said it before and I'll say it again; "nothing keeps ya bike where you left it better than a farkin big chain!"... and I used to park in London (bike theft capital of the world, never had a bike stolen.

And guess what, the new ZX10 is chained to a post right now.

That's for people who have lost eyes, limbs or broken noses.

anyone have any idea if i can get compensated for this?
If the Police locked someone up for it, they can apply to the courts for compensation on your behalf. I wouldn't hold your breath tho. Also, if they locked someone up, you could sue them civily. The amount it will cost you to go to court and do this kinda rules this out tho.

If you can't afford to pay $700 out of your own pocket when things go wrong, then I suggest you get insurance.

for most people who ride bikes, the insurance premium will quite likely be more than $700. add the excess ( ~$500) to that and the overall costs skyrockets.

if he had the bike for, say, 4 years uninsured, then $700 divided by 4 is not too bad a hit. in any case, he should be thanking his lucky stars that he got his bike back with only that much damage and still rideable, it could have been a lot worse.

The problem, Dave, is that most people don't think like that. They don't put $175 dollars a year aside to pay for $700 damage.... they spend it on other stuff.

So when the bill for repair comes around, you have to pay it out in one hit.
