I'm going over to the dark side

Post by redzedx7r »

I have put a bid on a 2001 Ducati 996s with extras for 36000AED which is about $12500 Aussie on a local version of Ebay (http://www.souq.com). I work with owners brother and he said he is keen to sell.
At that price for a bike with only 5500kms , Termi pipes, carbon fibre bits, cover and race stand I can;t afford not to buy it.
I wont be riding on the roads here except to get to Jebel Haffeet, 60 corners of smooth smooth bitumen up to 5000ft or to the Dubai autdrome.
I am prepared for the high servicing cost here not sure if I can afford them in Oz.

Any thing I should be looking out for or wary of with owning or riding one of these? It only has 10hp more than my old ZX7R but it has about 20% more torque than the 7.
I will be bringing it back to Australia when I leave here, i can bring it in duty free with my personal effects..schweet  !

Going OK in the desert, I'll be here for another 3 or 4 years depending on whether or not my oldest daughter stops smashing my car at home in Brisbane :x .
Off to the Superbikes in Qatar (Losail) next month (about 45mins flight away) to cheer on the Aussie riders. Two things that impress the locals about Australians, the way we ride superbikes and our cricket gods

Best laid plans of mice....
looks like the 996 is off for a little while, we could not agree on a price he wants just a little too much for it, but he has had no other serious offers. Don't know how long I can go without a sportsbike for  , i am not getting any younger. It was a pitty cause it was in good nick, service just done and with plenty of extras just needed new tyres (tyres go off or hard here after 18mnths - 2 years due to the heat & humidity).
I have considered a used japanese sportsbike but there are a lot of stolen bikes (& cars) from Australia and Europe sold in Dubai and I don't want to support those crims.
Keep you posted also considering importing from the USA as the shipping and import duty (5%) is cheap. I could land a 999 here from the states for around AU$18,000. Might even consider getting a newer ZX10R from the states.

Howzat!
Got it, well we agreed on a price 38,000AED/AUD13,350, four grand below what he was originally asking. I pick it up week after next, in time for the California superbike school in Dubai in early April
