i am with colette on this one, there is a reason there is an oil filter on the bike, to filter the oil, which is thing that will catch alll the flecks of shite! and there is a reason they put 'run in' oil in the bike. you have to run it in!! Colette and I both bought BRAND spanking new 636's and from the convo's we have had both of ours are running strong!

The reasoning behind not using Synthetic is that its too slippery. :) So the engine will not wear in.

This guy throws a different spanner in. :P Its probably linked somewhere else but here it is anyway. It is controversial, so dont flame me if you dont like it. Just think about what he says and why. Also think about the fact that bike engines he builds win races.

running in oil is from the noahs ark days when manufacturing tolerances were large and cast iron barrels existed

I bet donuts that the oil that is in new bikes is the cheapest nastiest shit that they could find which is another reason for 1K change

fact is the oil filter only filters down to a certain size, anything smaller travels around your motor causing wear rather than running in

did you change your own oil an see for your own eyes on the 2nd oil change all the metal fleck coming out , this is even more prevelant on newer dirtbikes which often have a metal strainer in the oil circuit

when you spend $15K on a new bike then $30 for oil and a filter is cheap insurance and the benefits have been seen many times

Hoffy you have bought up a point... I have heard that big name manufacturers of white goods like washing machienes only build them to last through the waranty period so thay can sell more!

With the oil change question if you have time & the $ change it!
first 2 changes mineral
next changes full synthetic

My previous ducatis would get a change every 1000 ks sometimes sooner!
this is from a prevention aspect... V twin rebuilds are real exxy!

What so anyone doubts that changing the oil is a good idea ??
Or that motors running in have metal going through them ??
Or do you think that the metal works to file down stuff so it "runs better"
Does anyone think that it DAMAGES it more to change the oil early, surely no one is THAT stupid  And that is what the original post is about.

No it wont stop the bike going DOH but it is cheap insurance to change it more often that recomended. Basic stuff really.

Ask yourself whether if you had the choice between 2 identical bikes and one had regular oil changes (inside the specs by half each time) and one on spec which YOU would rather have. Simple eh

And dont kid yourself that the first K's on the bike ARENT the most important. Cmon guys this shouldnt really be up for discussion its straight common sense. How you may have f*cked up your run in (even if it is running "strong" ) is unimportant. That you may now suspect you should have changed it earlier and are trying to convince others to your wicked ways is. Its fine metal, it goes through the filter, bearings pick it up, it might be YEARS but the motor MUST suffer. THINK about it.

So I take it you nay sayers dont warm your bikes up either cause advice like your giving is in the same league
Just because you CAN ride, doesn't mean you SHOULD

That's what it comes down to - who's right and wrong is a hesaid-shesaid argument that'll go nowhere.
If you're worried or want to be absolutely certain, change it early.

I always have changed the oil and FILTER twice as often as the manufacturers say, all depends on how long you want to keep the bike, now sync oils is a problem for me, just how many K do you do before you should use it?

8-10k is usually enough before you start using fully synth.
