Car drivers - Give the L' platers a break
Car drivers - Give the L' platers a break
Ive been on the road for 2 weeks, and every single car that has been behind me, has overtaken me - no mater what my speed. They will overtake me when im at + 120 km/h...
Now I dont know if this is because I have a shiny yellow L plate on the back of my bike, but sometimes they dont even move to the other side of the road, they only move half way off the road to overtake.
Does anyone else receive this kind of treatment?

Yeh... When can you get your P's in Tas? Thankfully here It is only 3 months on the L's before you can go for your P's... dont know if drivers attitude will change but at least my legal speed limit will go up and ill get some points.Daisy wrote:I'm seriously considering throwing the L plate away. Don't think I can suffer the numbnuts for another 3 months.

Umm shouldnt you be doing the speed limit mate for one. Gettin fined sucks!!
Just keep you whits about ya, stay alert & let the mongrals go past.
Not displayin a plate will cost ya mate... money.
Hold in there, Ps not to far away & then ya full licence. Which means bigger bikes.
Hang in there Rob......

Yup just gotta round up them "L" platers anyway ya can
(Not starting an arguement with this but!)
Well I remember being on "L's" was many years ago and exactly the same thing happened; I found it is safer to let them past otherwise they will try a move on a dangerous stretch or corner. Or just stay right on the white line in the centre. Kinda dangerous anyway, when I was cycling a lot I always took one full lane on a multiple lane hwy otherwise cars would try and scrape past you in the same lane. It resulted in many flat tyres and expensive bent rims, so I decided to take the lane as mine which I was legally allowed too do. Besides at that time I could travel close to the speed limit anyway. Copped much abuse too, but they soon shutup and closed their windows when I caught up to them at the next set of traffic lights
Just as well, if they even opened their door I would have been so exhausted I wouldn't be able to do anything anyway
It was amazing how some arrogant drivers seem to think they are better than you because they are in a cage and pay “taxes”, if you met them socially I bet they would be different
You have a right to be there but just be aware of assholes ok

To answer your question Rob, it isn't your L's mate. You will eventually get used to idiot drivers, just keep thinking everyone is out to kill you and you will have a better chance of surviving. Be constantly on the lookout for people checking mirrors and keep glancing at the front wheels of cars, and if you are really lucky, sometimes people will do headchecks before they change lanes.
Keep at it, i have only been on for 3 years and i'm 33. I ride from curl curl to sydney each day in peak traffic and not one day goes by that i don't have some sort of close call (in fact you notice it more when you have a good run).
Keep riding, keep driving, the more riders we have on the road and in cars, the better chance we have of people seeing us.

We had a rule change this year and now you have to have Ls for 6 months. Sux too when I've had a car and truck licence for *cough* twennysumthinyears.
I've tried moving to the left to let the tossers pass, but they slow down with me, so I just ride at the same speed as everyone else - which is why I could do without the big yellow square. I do try to stick to the lower speed zones where I can tho.

Im in the process of teaching another daughter how to drive, and just like her older sisters experience the Ls invite really stupid stuff. Its not about the speed your doing either last lesson she got run off the road on an off ramp and she was speeding. Didnt beleive what I was seeing?
If he had done it to me on the bike heed be wearing SHARK imprinted
backwards on his forehead and picking kevlar out of his bleeding gums
She wasnt up to chasing him in the 1.3L cage, "calm down dad"
sad some things you see on the road.

Dont sweat it, treat it as a game where you win by staying alive and keeping all your points, getting the rating one for life and STILL having fun.
That said cars will overtake truck and buses and then slow down... or worse prop and indicate to turn. 4wds will hang two wheels over double white lines and then go a funny shade of white when they see a wall of coach running along said lines. Cars will look at you stupidly when they dont indicate on a roundabout and then find that theres this bloody great wall in front of them because the driver didnt stop just to be sure they are not idiots. Cars will tailgate a coach so close you cant see the bumper in the reversing camera and coaches as it happens have rather good brakes. Thats my personal experience from driving coaches for about 10 years.
So it isnt just you or L plates or even bikes.
Its what car drivers do because they are so coddled in their illusion of saftey gifted to them by advances in technology and the fact that people like to dominate.
