stock Vs aftermarket can?

Post by Yankee »

okay seriously, besides looks and sounds, is there any reason for getting an aftermarket can? Like do they really beat the stock one that Kwak spent $$$$$ on to get the most from the bike?? i've heard that the stock is the best one, albeit big and ugly, possibly heavier and certainly sounds "gayer" (no offense to our modern lifestyle living bretheren and sisteren!)
what do you think? thos dyno charts correct?

The bike is designed to work it's best as they are, while meeting all the relevant design rules etc. So getting more out of a modern bike engine would really mean new can, filter, jetting/calibration, just how much do you want to spend?

It is ultra competitive so I can't see any manufacturer willingly giving away hp for anything...

Manufacturers produce bikes to meet certain limits noise & emission being the 2 major constraints so they have be conservative to get them into the showrooms.
As for noise ?, Well let me see ?, how noisy are the new 4 stroke Motogp Bikes ?.
oh thats Right THEY ARE VERY VERY LOUD
Considering 1 of the 3 reasons they switched from 2 strokes to fourstrokes was Noise Pollution & in less then 2 years the things are louder then the 2 strokes ever were.
Theres HP to be found with aftermarket "zorsts" but you may have to spend coin on other bits to match the can. The Biggest saving with any can is weight. I've heard as much as 12 kilos can be saved this way.

My full Akra system weighs in at about 4 kilo. If memory serves me correctly, the stocky weighs in at around 12 or 13.

Easier than going on a diet.

Here were my reasons for changing from the stock gold pipes on the Z.

1. Weight
2. Sound
3. Power

While the originals are great they weigh a lot. Looking at 10-15kg. Since fitting my aftermarket exhaust I have learnt a lot.

You'd be suprised how little is spent in that area. Its only done relatively basically, and not much is changed bike to bike. Basically, they found a combination that works and keeps them in line with legislation, and stuck with it.

Its why, despite ignoring those regulations, the door is left open for performance companies to get in there and do the difficult intricate maths to get the most out of the bike.

thats is right. by putting mods on the bike ur making it better as the are designed to a limit.

but then agian, if u get a 1 litre bike why do u want mods on it. how many people do u know that can say "i can ride a 1 litre bike or bigger to its full potential".

The only place you are going to need the extra power is down the front straight at willowbank otherwise I believe they have plenty as they are.

Ask alex and sam if they can remap the stock bike without the power commander,I dont know as my bike is only new so i havent been there and comeing off a 250 to a 600 there seems to be plenty of grunt and i am still getting used to the nuances of a different bike.

I have been doing a lot of reading on the american 636 site and they seem to think there is more power to be had with a custom map over the power comander supplied one and will tell you where to get one to give it a go.

A aftermarket pipe will probably give you a bit more midrange but i dont know how loud they are I will probably find out at willowbank on the 21st while i hang over the fence.

Yeah when speaking to them they advised that they will do a custom map, I think the three settings on the power commander goes, 0 Map(factory stock) and the other to spaces are for custom maps, LAE stated that they would do their own if brought to them and they leave the other space if you want to download one for yourself from the net as there are a shitload around the place.

I have found their are some flat spots on mine with the injection which this would hopefully iron out and they also said they use a DNA brand filter( think thats right ) in place of a K & N. I asked what were the real benefits of putting these on and basically was told that it will iron out any flatspots as previously mentioned, there will be a slight horsepower gain and generally the bike will breath better with the new filter and generraly run alot better and be alot more responsive.

I am not saying that my bike doesnt run great now but hey any excuse to improve on them!!! and the flatspots being ironed out would be good cause they do tend to annoy me at times, dont know if your 636 is doing it but have noticed sometimes when giving the throttle a good twist it will go but then there is a little surge, just enough to annoy but nothing major cause the bike is great.

As for the trackday at Qld Raceway I dont think I will be attending as per usual have been hit by bills and pre-arranged social events that I was unaware of which is every married mans lament.
