Remember well the first day I had my car license too, take the Toyota Corolla wagon out for a run, heading to a roundabout, car in front, car behind, put foot on brake and phark me, nothing there. Great, first day i've ever driven (legally) alone and i'm gonna run up some blokes arse and be paying for it for the rest of my life.

Well no idea how I had the presence of mind to do it but dumped it down a gear and went straight over the top of the roundabout missing everyone, ppl looking on in amazement at this fuckwit P plater driver.

Pull up down the road a bit, pump the brakes and they come back and never had a prob with them after that, mate checks them for me, pads are fine, got fluid, NFI why they didn't work, they just didn't.

NB No I wasn't trying to put my right foot on the clutch instead of the brake

anyway i was comming up this hill, i come out of a 25k harpin uphil in second gear (its cambered but bumpy) and nail it, just as it hits 6K or so there is this rigde in the road that i pop it onto the back wheel and wheelie up the hill

anyway, on this particular day there was a car in front just before the corner, so i drop back a little and slow down to give me enough room to do my wheelie......anyway comming ot of the corner i dont think i'm going to be in the right rev range when i hit the bump so as i hit it i just give a little (and i mean little) tug on the bars and farkin up she comes - straight past the balance point making my legs come off the pegs and flail behind........still leaning forward for all i'm worth and trying to not let go it starts going from left to right....wobbling from side to side....then for some reason the front came down, i climbed back on and shat my self.

2 corners later is a rare right knee down corner...so i did what anyone else would do and ground the sucker into the tarmac and sparked up the boys behind.

tim saw the whole thing and commented that its the closest anyone has vere come to crashing (biaggi's feet were still on the pegs) but didnt.....and thats rich considering some of the things i've seen him save...i'll get him to post about the picton road exit one one day

I was riding along in a krsc group one day and we were fair fanging it through some twisties on a road I didnt know... Andy was right behind me going for the chase down.... I came up to a corner and was hard on the brakes when I hit a small pothole.... My ... uhm... utter extremities were pushed up against the tank and with the front forks close to fully loaded the shock had to be passed on to uhm.... my utter extremities.... Needless to say I went crosseyed, a tear sprung to my eyes and I nearly passed out....

Not completely in the vein of this discussion but close enough I think....

I was in holland at the time, i was 17 and I was riding a Honda MTX50 bored out to 80cc. (not as slow as you might think, 2 stroke).... This bike was a motox style bike with high suspension and full sized.... Anyways, there was this corner that I used to guage my skill by.... on a good day I could get around it at 70k on a bad day only 50k... it was pretty much a 90 degree corner pretty sharp.... In any case..... Normally what I would do is get up to high revs in third gear and try to get around this sucker.... Normally I say, but this is a week after I bored it out to 80cc.... so high revs in 3rd gear was a fair bit quicker... I get about a third of the way through the corner and realise I was going way too quick.... on top of that there was some gravel right in the middle of the road.... I had 2 options at the time..... (because I didnt know any better).... Ditch or tree.... I decided to take option 1 hoping that the suspension would be able to take it.... so I am hard on the brakes, unable to steer, focused completely on my impending doom when my front wheel hits a rock, followed by some wet grass.... the bike begins to slide out from under me, but doesnt quite make it by the time I hit a tree... I think I hit the tree at 30km per hour..... but only with my head (which explains a lot really)... the bike glanced off, bending the front forks.... My helmet had split completely in half.... I was a little dazed but otherwise fine.... the bike had a bent fork, but other than that was able to be ridden.... expensive lesson.... but I definitely learned from it...

Doing Reefton hard on the day after a storm, it's not wet but there is flotsam everywhere.

Sticking it to the the go button, exiting a left hander, the guy in front (might have been Rob) runs over a 2 foot branch about 2 in. round.

The farker comes at me like Ghengis Khans Scimitar.

The old training comes back and I slip the punch. Probably would have been minus a head if it had hit.

Greg is probably the better one to tell this story as he was in the gold class seat as it happened. On this years Halls Gap trip, After waiting at Ararat for Tail End Charlie to come through i started to work my way back up toward the front. Passing Greg and some others as they swept through Moyston, All felt good and Greg tagged along for the spiritted run into Halls Gap. Just out of Moyston with Greg on my hammer we slipped into a nice left hander at about $1.80. I hugged the corner a little tighter than Greg and hit some ripples that started of a lovely case of head shake. I'm buggered if i know how i stayed on (More arse than class), I just wound it on, closed my eyes and waited for it to stop slapping from lock to lock.

Still havn't been able to get that stain out of my leathers, not to mention the Banger that turned from an external to an internal garment

Ahhh Plas, the memories of Gregs fly by on the way back from Casterton springs to mind as well

1) hitting something like a brick on the freeway @ 100kph at night that you didn't even see with cars all around you.

2) lane splitting while taking a roundabout not clever... when they don't give you any room and you've only been rinding for a few months, not clever at all. thought i was going to hit one of the other cars as i didn't have enough room to turn.

3) coming up to a turn on the great ocean road at a fine not too fast speed had the GF in the car behind me complaining that we were going to fast the whole time. so thought id slow a bit tapped the breaks a bit bike stood up a little, realised i wasn't going to make it, stood it up and hit the breaks, run off the edge of the road, luckily it wasn't one of those cliff ones and i was able to turn back onto the road. lucky to keep it up considering there where ditches and mud clumps everywhere.

it was early 2004, i was riding my RF900 purchased not two weeks beforehand complete with dyno sheet for 128bhp (wooohooo!!).

First bike since i sold my GSX600F back in 1999, and most powerful by far.

Riding back from Mount Tamborine on the waterford - tamborine rd. Itching to open it up in 2nd and 3rd at least before we were back on the main road. Found my oppportunity comming out of a 40kph righthander, pinned the throttle to the stop...faaaark this thing is a rocket!!! More more!!!

Had just clocked an indicated 180kph when i realised i was approaching one of those low concrete bridges that dips about 2m below the road to save building an actual bridge. Through sheer force of will i rolled off the throttle while part of me was still crying more....MORE!!!!!

The "dip" sign flashed past while i had 160kph up on the dial, i heaved on the brakes a split second before the road fell away beneath me. The suspension extended to the limit of its travel, i got off the brakes and landed morotcross style bottoming out the big riffer and bending the header pipes before i grabbed everything to pull the bike up before the 40kph left hander straight after the rise on the other side of the bridge.

I got away with that one but it was a close thing, if i had have waited any longer to shut the throttle off i would have been toast.

Wisc's story reminded me of something...

was riding along on the Motorway in NZ once and it was a horrid day... truely horrible... which was a shame because it had been brilliant all day and I had done the silverdale, hellensville, highway 1 loop (which is a bit of road comparable to the spur crossed with the great ocean road, but waaaay longer than the spur)... anyway, enough of that... but I was on my way home and it had started to darken and eventually rain.... I was caught behind a truck with a big bin on the back (or as i would have said back the... "a bug bun on the buck") ...

All of a sudden a refridgerator box kites into the air about 5 feet and comes roaring past me.... It missed my head by a few inches............ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

throw the bike through a right hander, next thing i know, it wont steer and go around the left hander coming up really quick.

The words "UR FARKED" flashed up on my visor.

Without thinking slammed on the rear break, arse end skids around and i'm heading sideways for the cliff edge. Something clicked, grabbed a fist full of front and stopped about 20cm before the end of the cliff face.

Strika's comment to Photomike on leaving him some room to run wide on the GOR got me chuckling (diff thread). 'Bout 10 years ago I run out of room on a Garners hire TRX near the apostles somewhere, and but for a tour bus operator himself going on the wrong side of the road I would have made a good hood ornament.
On the same trip came to the top of the Ottoway and seen my first chevrons into a corner warning. I felt like a German Uboat captain must have when they came across those ships camoflagued with stripes in WW2 (the big one) By the time my eyes uncrossed, only the brakes pulled me out, they may have been wooden but pulled in with enough force to put my hand in a permanent claw for another week (well thats my excuse) made em work.
