Data Dot's are a waste of F$#@in' money.

We have a Subaru Liberty 3r Spec B at work, which last Sunday a week ago had it's wheels and tyres knocked off. Surprise, surprise on Monday morning at 11.30 a listing goes up on Ebay from a shonky wheel and tyre bloke in Sydney for four wheels and tyres exactly the same as ours. We get on to Subaru, they say no sweat the car and wheels are data dotted, get the cops to check it out and we can prove conclusively that they're your wheels (or not). Total cost to replace by the way is $5,800.

Spoke to the cops last week, "no woriies, great stuff, yep we're keen to follow up, give us the details and we'll check it out". Followed up later in the week,, " haven't had a chance yet but don't worry the finger print guys ? are onto it". Followed up this morning to be told " we're not really interested and can't be bothered going out there". I say what can I do? He says " nothing without us".

So, we get our wheels pinched, have a pretty fair idea where they are, have a means of proving they are ours and noone can be bothered. WTF is the point of getting anything data dotted when noone can be screwed following up. Geez that gives me the shits. Sorry, rant over.....

Oh man that's a whole pile of crap.
Have you spoken to the general duty bloke or the snr constable on duty?

i'd suggest you try and outline your case again. Why aren't they interested anyway?

Well maybe let the insurance company know where the wheels are. They are pretty handy at getting shit like this sorted when in actual fact it's their money.

Alternatively talk to them about reimbursing you if you go and spend the money to buy the wheels back off the guy, then take the proof to the cops to have him charged.

Just a thought?

My house got burgled once.... the burglar stole a pair of sneakers from us.... he threw his own into the bushes behind the house..... Burglars have a distrust of other people and that is probably why he wrote his name in his shoes.... Looked him up in the whitepages.... Only one person with that name.... and he lives within 1km of us.... So we drive over there... no one home... We look in the window, there was a whole bunch of our stuff sitting there...

We discussed breaking into HIS house... but had already passed on his details to the cops...

So we called them.... waited for them to show up... They knocked on the door... No one home...

Apparently they went back 3 weeks later with a warrant and our stuff was no longer there... Big surprise...

Should have taken the law into my own hands...

Yeah we passed everything on to the insurance company. We were going to go and buy them back ($1500), but it's a fully maintained car so tyres are included in the lease and the insurance Co paid out the $5,800 less our excess ($1,000), so its sort of tossing good dough after bad.

If you want a good set of Sub wheels though, go check these babies out.

Mate think of it logically, go buy the tyres back for 1500, and pocket the difference, then take the proof to the cops and have him charged too!!!

OR buy them on ebay with a dodgy account, you don't care if you get a negative on.

Turn up at the guys house to pick them.
Check for marks and confront him.

Will I find my details in the register?
The National Register only contains items that have Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) on their . If the code laser-etched on the is a Driver’s License Number, VIN, HIN, Medicare Number, ABN, ACN, passport number, social security number or a business name, you will not find it here. Police use traditional databases and checks to verify such items.

eBay are good at removing stolen items. Tell them dates times etc, info from the cops etc. More details the better

The problem is the law, not the coppers.

Just because the wheels happen to be the same as the ones you've had nicked, there really isn't any proof that the ones on ebay are one and the same.

They have no authority to rock up and check the data dots on the wheels. Sure, they could contact the seller and ask if they could inspect them, but if they are nicked, what do you think the chances are that the seller will let them?

The next point, is that just because the person is selling them, it doesn't mean they actually nicked them. At best (under SA law) the seller could be charged with unlawful possession.

I'd suggest buying them back and havin the coppers on standby to check the data dots after you have possession of them. But even still, the seller would probably only be looking at a piss weak charge.

But couldn't you then sue to get your money back, plus costs....

Having said that, it sounds like you'll make $3,800 from the exercise less the $1,500 to but s/h ones.

Yeah this is my point Jase. The cops should have more backing to do some sort of quick effective checking of this sort of shit. If they did it would take about an hour to prove or disprove.To prove that the gear is yours you have to buy it back. In this case we've paid $1000 being our excess and have our wheels and tyres replaced. It's now not worth us buying them back, particularly given that we could do it and find their not ours anyway (although I'll bet they are). Even if we could reuse the tyres it's not worth our while as it's on a fully maintained lease so tyres are included in our lease payments anyway.

If they were mine personally then for sure I'd go and buy them back and follow through.
