Motorcycle Safety Officer, Vicroads

Post by mick_dundee »

Anyone in Vic intrested in taking this position on? Would be kinda nice to get an actual motorcyclist in the gig....

VicRoads is advertising for a "Program Consultant - Motorcycle Safety", but only lists knowledge of riding and safety as a desirable quality, not a key requirement along with many other attributes.

A consultant on motorcycle safety, but knowledge of riding and safety is not essential!?! Is it any wonder many Victorian riders think that it's state road authority, VicRoads, gets it wrong on rider issues time after time?

"Develop, implement and evaluate road safety countermeasures related to motorcycle licensing, training, safety and deterrence measures." ... but knowledge of riding and safety is not a key requirement!?!

"Provide functional, advisory and other services, supporting operational projects of the Vulnerable Road Users branch of the Road Safety Department, aimed at reducing the incidence and severity of motorcycle crashes" ... but knowledge of riding and safety is not a key requirement!?!

"An understanding and appreciation of the political contexts in which road safety programs and initiatives are developed and delivered" ... but knowledge of riding and safety is not a key requirement!?!

VicRoads places "ability to use standard desktop applications - Word, Lotus Notes, Excel, PowerPoint, etc" as a key requirement, whilst knowledge of riding and safety is relegated to merely desirable, not a key requirement.

How can VicRoads improve it's position, knowledge, and understanding on vulnerable road users, if key representatives of such groups aren't even required to have knowledge on the subject matter - in this case motorcycling!?!

Is this the key issue as to why riders are over-represented in Victoria's crash and fatality statistics? .. VicRoads just don't think it's a necessary requirement to have it's motorcycling policy and programme developers actually having any knowledge of riding and rider safety?

We here at Netrider would have thought that to be an employed consultant to VicRoads on motorcycling and rider safety, you would at the very minimum have to be a licensed rider with knowledge on riding and the safety issues affecting riders. How else could you accurately advise on where the states $50 rider tax should be spent?

If any reader works at VicRoads and would like to contact netrider@netrider.com.au and let us know just how a consultant on motorcycle safety getting paid up to $70,000 isn't required to have knowledge on motorcycling and rider safety issues, we'd love to hear and understand it.

Hopefully an actual rider, with real knowledge on motorcycling and rider safety, will have the right qualifications and experience for this role, apply, and get appointed to the position. If you just such a rider, please apply. If you know, or think you know, of such a rider please let them know about the position. If your a rider, please send the position to any other riders you know - hopefully a rider somewhere will have the qualifications and experience and be interested in applying. Lets flood VicRoads with applications from real riders, and finally get a rider in a motorcycling position.
