Advise request

Post by rotaboy »

hello guys and gals
i was hoping some of knoweledgable people hey would be able to advise me on an upgrade im planning.
im currently on a 1992 zxr250 to which im finding very comfortable on and very used to the acceleration.
i dont think im ready to upgrade to a bigger bike just yet but am thinking in about 6 months i would like to.
thing is im thinking a 60 would be a logical step but on the other hand i have a few mates that have said after about 6 months they got bored of their 600 and upgraded to a 1000...
so here my questions
would be be worth just geting a 1000 and be aware of the power potential and behave (i am actually very good at behaving)

also fund probably wont alow me to get a new bike so was lookin at probably a late 90/early 2000 model bike

are they any good in regard to handling and performance (i know a new bike would be better but funds wont allow) and is there anything i should watch out 4... im lookin at a zx10 or zx6

also this bike will be something that i hang on to for quiet a long time or untill i win loto!

any help on this topic would be greatly appriciated

Mate a 250 to a 1000 is a huge jump and likely to end in tears, especially a Zx10R,my advice is get a second hand ZX6R (great bike and you'll be surprised about the power) and start saving for a 10,it's all about steps and learning; don't be in a rush to get to the 1 Litre enjoy the trip :D

I went through the same dilemma, and ended up going off a GPX250 onto a ZX9R. It scared the shit out of me for the first half hour's worth of riding, then I slowly built up from there. Two years of riding the GPX every day and on most weekends taught me heaps though, and it wasn't long before I felt at least comfortable on the 9.

Having said that, when I got the 10 it almost felt like the same jump, so I definitely wouldn't recommend it as an upgrade from a 250....and a lot of current 600's seem to be almost as powerful as the older litre bikes too...

At the end of the day, it dosent matter one iota if its a 600cc or a 1300cc
if you know how to use the throttle because thats where the difference is;

If ya confident with the workings of a throttle, then upgrade to which eva
cc engine that takes ya fancy.

I neva bothered with owning or riding a 250 & just went straight to a 750

go a zx6.

any more power than that is wasted on the street anyway as you never will get to use it.

You will love a zx6. You will kick all your mates arses on it :D :D :D

I did that, too, then, after a year and a half on litre bikes, I went back to a ZX6. Getting on for five years and 65,000km later, I still have it.

That's going to be difficult, seeing how the ZX-10R didn't come out until 2004.

Sounds like your mates have never been to the track. Go a 600 and once you're quick enough to grind your pegs down to nubs get the thou if you still want. Flying around a corner with bits of the bike being ground away by the bitumen is heaps more fun than nailing it in a straight line. Requires more skill and balls too.

Rotaboy i did the step from the Yamy 250 Zeal (gutless for power) on to a ZX750R. Mates thought that i was nuts but as long as you are careful it can be quite fun. The prices are not that high and it can be a fun toy that will take a while to grow out of. As i said be carful 30hp - 120/130hp is a big jump and so is the weight factor also..

Yes and no. Yes, you can get yourself in a shitload of trouble on a 600, but, and it's a big but, it's much easier to get yourself into more trouble on a 1000, and a small mistake on the thou will likely punish you much harder than the same small mistake on the 6.

Having ridden Cath's 6 a few times now I always come away feeling that on the road it's no slower than my 9, but it's just a little less brutal.
