Helmet cam and LED signals

Just wanna try whether it's cheaper to set up a helmet cam myself with off the shelf parts and it is!

1) Bullet-cam - 1/4" SHARP CCD,PAL: 625 Lines, PAL Pixels- 320K,
DC 12V, 1.5 Lux = S$ 120
2) Connectors and cables = S$ 10
3) Battery Pack = S$4
4) No microphone for sound

Total spent=S$134 + some soldering, heat shrink cover for the connectors to make them waterproof, testing and time.(this exclude price of camcorder with AV in/out option)

As for my ninja9 tail LED signals, it cost me S$20 for the amber LED which has 20 LED per strip, cut it to fit.Some minor wiring, drilling and soldering.
Did this cause my high mount pipe was blocking the right signal view from the rear.

Will the camcorder still record the sound from the regular mic or will it try to use the audio that would usually be plugged into those AV cables?

Pretty cool mate. B ecareful with the helmet cam. If the boys in blue pull you over they can look at the footage and you canget done fore whats on there aswell. I know someone who did a burnout in a car and got stung on video footage.

There was a guy in England playing in the twisties, cam set up to record his fun. He rode carefully and to the speed limit in each and every village, but gunned it on the country roads (100k limit). He managed to attain speeds considered totally irrisponsible, and lean angles to make you seasick.

In one of the little villages he was pulled over by Mr.Plod doing breath testing. The police asked to watch the video, and promptly charged him with speeding and dangerous driving.

Two morals to the story

Never have a video set up where you can see either speed reading or revs and gear (for those with gear indicator).

Always use a camera that records on digital media (pref memory card). Digital media (pictures particually) cannot be used as evidence as they require a computer to generate the image.

It will record sounds thru the AV cables but the mic need external power source to push the sound signals into the camcorder thru the cables.
Still looking for some high gain mic to do that Stereo

Thanks for the advice photomike, dont wanna get into that predicament with the plods here cause just got a stern warning letter from them with regards to the crash i had a couple of months back

I've got a portable media player/recorder 40G with SD slot it records for 3hrs on a single charge and another player recorder with 256 flash memory and SD slot which does just that and it works with the cam set-up

It would appear that the law has moved forwards a little since I was at Uni. It appears that a digital image is acceptable if it is a primary image. This means that if the digital file can be taken from the initial storage device it is admissable as evidence.

Personally I don't see how it can be proved beyond reasonable doubt, unless they have your actual camera. Even then, one person could film something, lend you the memory card to put in your camera - and it would look like primary data.

If they ask to see your video ask them to fly to the moon then ask them if theres anything else they would like and ride off.

need a warrant or to arrest you before they can search or detain you and i would say veiwing your vid would come under searching you for evidence, if you where silly enough to hand over evidence before they arrested you they will accept it.


Dont believe everything you see on blue heelers its just for tv.

Bloke in Rocky (Yeppoon actually) did a stunt type vid.
Past it onto a mate that worked as a DJ.
DJ plays at Disco, off duty cop notes vid, gets said tape and

I have been told the same as above, have fun just do NOT look at your speedo etc.

How about the one I read in the papers some time back where the Briz guy got a letter from Main Roads for speeding on Mt Glorious/Nebo and when he took it to court a memeber of the public had taped him from their car (one would hope it was a passenger).
Anyone got some more knowledge/feed back on this ??

from what i heard it was a local who was sick of speeding motorists (inc cars) racing past his house which was in a 60kph zone every weekend.

Sorry Mitch for the slow reply, been busy lately cause i am starting work soon and currently doin my yearly re-tests for my job cause my job licence expired.
As for the answer i haven't been riding my ninja lately but i tried recording it while riding my mountain-bike, it records great except there's no sound.So i think i'll just add some good music to the footage next time

Sony make a lapel mic with a small calculator battery powering it. You need a powered mic to pick up the sound... but then you will need a wind protector to stop the wind rush noise.

The mic would plug directly into the handy-cam.
