Best fuel for a '99 ZZR1100

Post by Brayden's dad »

G'day,

This is my first post here. I have a 1999 ZZR1100. I've always fueled it with PULP believing it was the best. I went away with some mates about a month ago & one of them remarked that he doesn't use PULP because his bike ('94 Trumpie Sprint) is not tuned for it.

This comment started me thinking, so I thought I'd find a website where I could ask people who would know what is best for my bike. That's how I've wound up here & am interested in people's help, please.

Troy.

Premium

I used to run unleaded in my 250, but your bike loves premium, BP, or Caltex are the best :)

Cheers, thanks for that. I run my Monaro on BP Ultimate & I've always run the bike on Premium as well. But with the price of petrol these days & my mate making the unleaded tuning remark, I thought I may have been wasting my money.

It's nice to know the money was well spent.

I run BP Ultimate in mine. But that's all I've ever used. When it goes in for service that's whats in the tank, so theoretically that's what it is tuned for. Normal Premium would be fine though as it's still rated as a 92 octane rating I believe where as Ultimate is 98. Is the bike standard or is it modified with aftermarket exhaust and filter, timing advancer, bigger cams etc? All that can make a difference and could benefit from a higher octane fuel.

how do you know what is best use shelbpcaltexampolgoldultimatesynergy etc , or that you are wasting your money ? because someone said so or you read it on the internet

personally i stick with BP fuels where possible for 2 reasons , 1 the diesel guy told me it was the best they found after testing all the fuels and found it had the most repeatable results out of the fuels availabel , ( high tech repairer $5K diesel ful pump repair after shitty fuels used) and i have found it better than caltex or shell in the work ute

this is a rule of thumb for all vehicles

pick a station and use it for the test period if possible or try to keep on same brand

use unleaded for several tanks and see fuel consumption and bike performance
go to 95 and repeat
go to 98 and repeat

do the sums and see what works best for you and your bike

eg i now have a rodeo V6 work car
unleaded 400k range
95 420k+ range
98 380 k range

in my case the 95 works on 2 levels it gives extra range and works out the same cost as using normal unleaded so i use it , no point in going to 98 as it doesnt work in this case

every bike and vehicle varies , stick with the above forumla and see what works for you

also remember if you ever buy a new bike then fuel consumption varies when running in

I agree fully. As a Tour operator I do about 30-40,000kms a year on my ZZR11 and have managed to get 470 out of a tank... coughing & spluttering as we rolled into the servo... using Ampol Gold or Caltex Vortex 95. Standard unleaded has it pinging it's head off...

Ive been using optimax in my z750 pretty much since i bought it, the other day i wasnt near a shell so i used BP pulp an i noticed the bike feels so much more responsive then it did with optimax. But find all my cars have prefered optimax to BP, so im unsure.

On Shells website, they recommend that you do not use it (Optimax) in Motorcycles...

Meh nothing on there says its not recommened or directly relates to not using it in a bike with EFI, only close thing is changing plugs. To be honest, optimax would actually suit the bike as its compression ratio is alot higher then a car. I can understand that on a carbied bike, changes would be needed to get the best out of the fuel, but EFI not so much.

But thanks for the read.

whatever the fuck you do, stay the hell away from shell optimax.
it's murdered that many carbies it's not funny.

chattin with a bike mechanic the other day and he recons mobil and caltex are the best.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
