BEST STATE TO RIDE IN ?????

Well I voted for Victoria, you can ride for a week and never cross the same road twice and of course the PI circuit.
I know so many great roads there including the Great Ocean Road, the Spurs and my favorite is the road to Erica from Moe Why? ever been to the pub there and stayed the weekend

But the whole east coast of Australia has to be good due to the Great Dividing range (geography wise) has many awesome roads crossing it IMO.

Because it's cold and you spend half your time dodging thylacine's, hippies and second heads.

Not much of the Thylacine left Jase, still plenty of the other 2 though.

'Fraid I'm not going to vote. I have favourite roads in all the eastern states, depending on time of year.

QLD - plus for weather, minus for general road surfacing. Still some excellent roads, though.

NSW - I got out once, what can I say? Still, the Bruxner, Oxley, Putty and a few others make visiting a little more bearable.

VIC - generally too cold, although the reverse can also be true. I got cold even in Februrary! Better than Tassie in this regard, though not much. Some very good roads, though.

TAS - When the weather's good it's a blast. When it's not it's miserable. No matter where you are, the furthest you can be away from a good road is about 1 hour. <heresy> It's actually got me thinking about a car project that got left by the wayside a number of years back, simply because of the weather.</heresy>

Summary: Who cares? There are advantages and disadvantages to each. I live in Qld because I like the weather (even in summer).

Having only ever ridden in Victoria (in aus that is) after moving from NZ my opinion goes something like this...

In NZ if I wanted to ride on twisty roads, I had a choice of hundreds of roads, all were well maintained (similar to reefton area) and all were within several KM of where I lived.... And in fact, the same would apply no matter where you live... The only thing is that you dont really get many straights, you have to go looking for them... I remember once meeting someone at "that straight piece of road"...

In Victoria good rides are few and far between.... The ones that do exist are averagely to heavily populated.... and are usually swarming with the local constabulary... Victorians dont know any better... so you can forgive them for thinking that vic is the beez knees... One thing that IS great though is that if you do one of the more popular rides there is no shortage of people who share your passion to chat to when you stop for lunch or petrol...

I suspect that Tasmania would be pretty good, according to some NZ mates the roads are similar and mostly well maintained... (one said that they werent signposted as well though)...

Yeah Stereo, the signage is a little lacking in parts........... Like a series of 90-100 klm/h turns that get you into a rythmn, then a tight hairpin appears unsignposted out of nowhere to keep you alert!!!

Yup, but if you had to pick a place to be the Shangri-La of motorcycling in mainland Australia, there's no two ways about it...

Within an hour's ride is Mt Hotham, Mt Buffalo, Tawonga Gap, Falls Creek. The good bit of the Omeo Highway is two hours away, Bairnsdale on the Great Alpine Road another hour past that...

I can't believe Western Australia is not in the poll, although most of the members of this site seem to be eastern based with only a few of us sandgropers (West Aussies) registered.

There are many great roads around the west and here you can go for two weeks at a time not crossing the same one twice, or if you do it was because it was so damn good you had to ride it again. The police are spread pretty thin here in country WA so not much chance of have problems with the law. I could spout of a few names of roads but you will have never heard of them so there is no point. Come for a visit, I'll show you around. Great people, great scenery, fantastic roads, awesome food, bugger all police, what more could you ask for.

Going to look into the Tassie thing though, my dad is moving there at the end of May.
