Adge's ZX2R (large files)

Post by adge82 »

Stripped the outer edges of my wheels and polished them up this weekend.
Thought it might be the perfect opportunity to take a few piccies as well.

Thanks for the kind words, makes all the cleaning seem a lot less painful..

The rims are almost mirror polished. But they still have marks on them from the old paint, so its gonna take some more work to get them perfect.

As for riding it  its my daily commuter, it goes to and from work every day, then plays on the weekend.

To polish rims:

You will need
1. Paint stripper (selleys kwik strip)
2. Really good masking tape (can get it from supercheap)
3. Paint brushes.
4. Bag o rags.

Step 1:
Mask up all parts of your rims that are to remain painted. Also mask the tyre, dont know if you need to but i like my tyres so i did anyway.

Step 2:
Glob paint stripper onto your wheel. really glob it on, but only do a 3rd of the wheel at a time. Wouldnt want any of the stripper dripping onto the bike or parts of the wheel you want to remain painted.

Wait 5-15 minutes depending on how easy it comes off.
Then just wipe the paint off the area you have applied paint stripper (caution: burns skin and eyes, you may want to wear gloves. Or just tell your wife your tuff like i did, then go cry behind the shed).

Step 3:
Re-apply fine layer of paint stripper to clean up any that didnt come off in the first run.
Re-wipe after 5 minutes or so and do the rest of the wheel...

Step 4:
Wash the wheel. Really well.
Also remove the tape and wash the tyre and goop from tape off the tyre and painted part of the wheel.

Step 5:
Polish.

I used a polishing bit on my drill and some autosol and went nuts, you could do it by hand, but good luck and ill see ya next year.

Thats pretty much it.
Give the bike a a couple of coats of wax and take photo's.

Did you take the tire off'f the rim or did you leave it on there? Did you leave it on the bike or take it off?

I left everything on the bike to do it.
Would be a heap easier to take the wheels off the bike, and the tyres off the wheels. But i dont have the tools or stands to do it, so i left it all on the bike.
