New Helmet Discussion, Which one?

Post by Z1000 »

Hi all,

Been a while however I am looking at buying a new lid and want to know what people think and their experiances with different brands etc.

I currently have a Shoei which has served me well but I think I can get something better and with a lot less "wind noise". Cost is a factor but I am prepared to pay for something that is quiet. Also if you know of a good place within Brisbane that gives good prices add that as well.

Currently I am looking at a Suomy, OGK FF4 and... (let the discussion begin)..

Thanks

To be honest it's subjective..

One person says Shoei's are quiet, another noisy.. it all depends on how well they fit your head on how noisy they are.

Just make sure you wear it in the shop for at least ten minutes to check for pressure points, but as for wind noise you won't know until you are on the road, and since they can't let ppl test ride them, it's the luck of the draw.

But if you've found the Shoei's noisy, def try another brand.

In any case, you will find it hard going to get good feedback on this, since people dont go through a lot of helmets and by the time they can give decent feedback the model in question has been replaced with a newer model...

As someone already said, a lot of people say that shoei's are quiet, some say they are not, others swear by Arai, others again say that even the top of the line models are not that great.... Sharks are supposedly noisey, but I had someone tell me a few weeks ago it was the quietest helmet they had owned....

Personally I use a KBC and its pretty noisy, but not as noisy as my last helmet by a long shot....

all I can say is..get one that fits
worry about colours and brands later
I have had Shoei AGV Laser HJC and Shark
all good, none were cheap (its MY head in there)

and make sure you try them on in the shop
don't read a newspaper...go look at the bikes

What about those BMW helmets ? I quite like it and they claim 82db which supposedly very quiet.

I don't like the price tho :(

Ditto on all the above

Depends on your head shape and how you ride

I USED to fit Shoeis until I fractured my skull (yeah I know, that explains it eh? ), now only AGV's fit....
Not only that I could never see properly out of my Shoei at the track, but the AGV (and a KBC I had) seem to have a "higher" visor cut out that you can see out of when tucked in.

I have also experienced the whistle that changes tone (and sounds like ALL sorts of things) when I borrowed a friends HJC (cheap shit) all them stick on vents.... dodgey as.

Removable liners (and ear plugs) area a must.....

I am going for a new matt black AGV, would love a Rossi rep but so fugen dear just for the graphics.....
Just because you CAN ride, doesn't mean you SHOULD

Don't buy RXT because they are utter shit (I have had three fail in the strap) and the importer couldn't be in the slightest bit interested- will not warrant them. (moto national) I would be wary buying an OGK because they are imported by the same clowns and it would be a case of 'tough shit' if you had any problems with it.

If an Arai Fits you, I highly recommend them. I have had a fair few offs with one on and never had a concussion, so superstitously I stick with them. But as all the others have mentioned your fit is the most important thing. A lot of people buy their helmets too big. They try them on in the shop and they feel comfy, so they grab it. Not realising it will pad out initially and make it a sloppy bucket that moves around and iritates over a days ride, and smacks you in the face when you pop up from behind the screen.

I have heard good things about OGK, and naturally both Shoei and AGV are quality brands which should provide good protection, longevity and comfort.

With Helmets more is always better. Buy the very, very, very best quality lid you can afford. I usually can't afford the mega dollar top end race reps, so often take a superceded plain coloured lid instead. When I bought my Arai Omni (1996- And still fits perfectly and is intact and not worn out) on a run-out special, and my Current Arai Condor, I got on a shop special also. It made the Arai about the same price as Suomy/Shark/AGV mid range lid, but with what I feel is a better protection level.

I have heard (not sure if it's true??) that no racer has ever recieved a brain injury while wearing an Arai!!!!
