i have an addiction.

Post by mitch179 »

im badly addicted to wheelies. seriously. is anyone else in the same boat ? ?

every oppurtunity i can ill practice wheelies, like off the lights when i see there is a nice straight bit of road in front and out on rides, basically whenever im in first and can relatively safely get the front wheel off the deck....

also what i wanna know is, does it do any damage to the bike ? (i dont put them down hard or anything so i cant see it hurting the suspension)

I'm no expert but I've heard long lingering ones can cause probs as the oil in your donk runs to the back, thereby starving the front. I guess this depends on how the oil gets to the top of the engine though. I think this was a prob with some of the early R1's.

It probably puts a few stresses on the bike that it wouldn't otherwise wear, but hey if the things got the power to do it in the first place then I guess its' designed for it.

Be careful though eh.
It's really all about standing around drinking Dave's beer.

Can be no good for head stem bearings, and possibly swing arm bearings.

Same bike, same problem....

The only damage that I know of that happens on a regular basis because of wheelies is the front fork oil seals.... they can burst because of the smack the bike gets on the way back down...

I dont practise all that often...
Only when i am completely alone on the road.... I dont want to hit anyone, and I dont want to fall in front of a moving car...

That means I probably try 6-10 times a week...

Im still crap at them though

Hi,
my name is Plasma and I'm a wheelieholic.......

I'm crap at em but I love the feeling and I practise when I think its safe to do. Only Power Up's ATM but working on the Clutch Ups in second.

Depends how hard you land them.

I've heard of some nasty damage stories (buckled wheels etc), if fact I've known people to crash after a hard landing which is perhaps worse

Even if you land 'em soft you're not going to be doing your drive-chain, fork seals and head bearings much good in the long term....oh well, it is fun though!
Motorcycle's are inherently unstable...

imo, i dont land them any harder than say hitting a decent sized bump in the road so i dont really think im putting excess amounts of strain on the front end but oh well!

i agree that it would be putting a fair bit of extra stress on the chain and sprockets tho :?

but its ohh so damn fun, i would like to learn to clutch up second but i would end up going to fast and probably scare the shit out of myself

im sort of addicted too, if the front doesnt come up on constand full accel in 1st, it aint going too (craptimax does this) but good fuel and its all front up action, i dont use clutch for wheelies dont think its good for it.
but i can keep it up through second till about 140, but i dont think thats good for the tyre (flatspots) and head bearings and forks, so i dont do that very often.

mine comes up piss easy in first all u gotta do is hard accel from about 6k and it lifts the faster u open the gas the higher it will go, mine has a pc3 with a custom map i guess helps it along a bit 8)

i always use bp ultimate, used vortex a couple of times and couldnt really feel a difference so i think its more down to technique than anything

Yeah, its all about how fast you open the throttle.... if you just whaaammo it open it definitely comes up very quick....

Basically im still trying to get a feel for the amount of throttle I have to grab to get a slow rising wheelie.... I dont want it to come up in one quick go... I want it to come up slowly...

Also not comfortable changing gears yet...
