Yes you need a Motorcycle Australia (MA) licence for competition that is licenced by MA.
Best advice - go and do a couple of Track Days first, see how you go. You will be *surprised* at the difference between 'fast' road riding, and 'track' riding, its a world of difference......
If you do OK with the track days, then you need to join a sanctioned Club, in order to obtain a licence. The club you join will depend on the type of racing you want to do.
Your bike will need to be modified to meet scrutineering standards (lockwiring, etc). This is OK if you have a dedicated track *weapon*, but may be an issue with your normal ride ??? (Race glass, lights etc).
Get onto the MA website http://www.ma.org.au
have a look at this, and take it from there. This advice is *very* basic, but will put you on the right *track* (boom boom)

Trackdays are the way to go dumber, I wouldnt hold your breath waiting for lakeside to open but it would be really neat.
Qld raceway is where you have to go atm or wait till the next morgan park run by dc ridedays.
You could have a look at http://www.trakdaze.com where you can read the Qld ridedays thread and follow the links.
mostly be champions days for a while and if you have to come that far for a day its worth bringing the bike on a ute or trailer because youer buggered after a day hard at it.
I think you need leathers and boots/ gloves to ride at willowbank these days two or it might just be the slow group can squid it.

If I rode my bike at the speed of light, what would happen when I switched on its headlights?

I race a Superbike in the 'Formula 2' class, which is for C and D grade riders of machines 600cc - 1300cc, and the subclass for the season is C & D grade Superbike. Did you read the report?
Anyway rules are many but simple, lockwire the things that need it, fibreglass fairings, no sidestand, all road gear off, bike in good mechanical nic etc.
It's going to cost you what it takes to achieve the above, plus ~$85 for club membership, $225 per meeting plus $75 for Saturday practice if available, and $255 per year for a National licence (plus a test and a written exam) or $44 for a day licence per event.
Tyres will cost you $450 per set of Bridgestone slicks at the track, or you can go the second hand route, they are great for trackdays and I have raced on them before; but when you are really pushing hard it is good to know what you have under you. I do not think I could have trail braked and turned as hard as I was on the weekend on old rubber. Stretch was having dramas because his tyres had a trackday or 2 on them already.
Anyway man it is the best fun you will ever have, but as mentioned above do some trackdays first, and see where you fit in speedwise. Come out when I am next out if you want and I will help where I can.
