I've got a job in the desert

Post by krusty »

I have accepted a job with BHP working at the Olympic Dam mine in central South Australia, so naturally I will be moving out to the vast expance of red dust, pics here http://ugrad.phys.unsw.edu.au/~dkruss/olympic/ . I make the move at the end of next week, they even covering the cost of taking my bike out there.

I've planned a farewell dinner for this Friday night if anyone wants to come, it will be at Mama Teresa's pizza shop on Anzac Pde (next to the Regent) in Kingsford at 7.30pm this Friday night. Let me know if you can make it.

I'm going on a ride that conflicts with the SBK http://www.ksrc-au.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=8195 I know I'd rather be riding if I can instead of watching someone else have the fun.

Well a lot can be said for it, well it has a pub at least. Lot of nice flat roads, I can see a lot of top speed type stuff but bugger all cornering skills tests :)

Will miss your dinner unless you want to ride down to Vic for another send off :)

Good luck with it, what's the job incidentally? Assume the money must be f'ing good cos not much lese looks attractive out there :D

Good luck with the job.

I'll be doing radiation safety related stuff. I'll be in the air-conditioned office most of the time.

I'm taking the bike, they cover the cost to move it. I'm getting the sprocket ratio changed before I go to suite the higher speed roads. When I was given a tour of the town I noticed there were a few street bikes parked in peoples driveways, I'll probably meet them in the pub or something and see if we get get something reqular organised, like a bike night.

You would miss all your women then huh Mina? 8)

Good luck with it man, sounds like a top paying job for sure. My brother is due to go back to the mines soon, I think he is mostly around Cameron's Corner, miles from where you are.

An update, I'm still alive. I'm back in Sydney for a few days for my graduation and a wedding.
I haven't got a net connection at my new home but I am working on it and someone will probably get upset if I start post whoring at work.

Olympic Dam is an interesting place with all the processes the rock goes through to become pure metal. The social scene is very active and parties generally result in the house stinking of beer for a week.

I've checked out the local motox track, its huge with some nice jumps, $50 gets you membership and a key to the track so you can go when ever you want. I have got my bike rego transfered to South Australia which is $70 than what I paid in NSW.

Last weekend I went to Woomera and watched the launch of the HyShot rocket, a lot of waiting for a few seconds isn't fun, atleast it was free and there was a BBQ.

Here are links to some more pictures

More will come once I get more time
