Another team crashed 06 candidate
Was a great day for a ride, and I was feeling a little playful. I was at the back of the group, so started hanging back and then playing catch-up. I got my pace up and was going quite well until I found a right that looked a little damp (possible shadow). I was going in hot and decided to scrub off some speed on the way in. Applied the rear brake and managed to lock it up. Got all out of shape so went for the upright to sort it out and hope to turn back in. Scrubbed the speed off but ran wide and found gravel.
Bike went down on right side causing minor scratches to upper fairing & duct tail and put a nice dent in the can. Riding gear was unaffected except the gloves that holed in a couple of places.

.

Here is what he told us when he arrived.
Mike; -"I had just hit the twisties when i came across a slick shod local on a tricked out R1 really getting into it. Thruogh the first series of 200kph knee on the deck sweepers, sparks were flying off his titanium sparkie sliders, and he was smoking the rear out of each turn. I played it cool and hung back behind him for a few corners, then started to show him a wheel here and there, still sitting in the centre of my seat so he could see in the mirrors that I wasn't even trying. This obviously upset him seeing my little F4 commuter, top box equipped and all, so he wound it up a notch.
I decided that this guy was going to hurt himself trying to keep in front of me, and therefore would be unavailable for next weekends Phillip Island round of the domestic SBK's, so I decided to save him any injury and just fly past him. Plus I didn't want him to have to overrev the R1 and have to rebuild it before the race next week.
I lined him up in one of the slower 190klm corners and went around the outside of him in a left hander. I waved a friendly hello with my left hand as I went past, just to let him know I was enjoying the cruise with him too. After this turn their was a short straight where we could really wind it on, so I wound the F4 up to 270. But as you know the R1's have a slight top speed advantage and he slipped back past on the gas. I wasn't worried as a tighter 170kph right hander was approaching, and I figured I would just outbrake him. Well he tried to do the same thing, so when we went into the turn he immediately ran wide and started pushing his bike into mine. I held the R1 off my fairings and helped guide the errant R1 rider through the turn with me. It was all going ok with me managing to grab my throttle with my left hand, and reach over and grab his handlebar and throttle with my right hand so I could guide both bikes thru the turn. Unfortunately the R1 rider shat himself the silly prick, and grabbed the front brake. That pushed his bike under mine, allowing all four of our tyres to leave the tarmac.
At this point I was starting to get a little worried that I may not be able to make the corner with both bikes. So I decided I would concentrate on correcting mine first, before I helped the R1 rider with his, otherwise we might crash............................................................................................................................................. (I have edited out a lot of the stuff he told us from here, as it was starting to sound a little unbelievable. Matter of fact, if it hadn't been Mike, I might have doubted some of it!)
Cont... In the end, I managed to wrestle mine back up on its tyres, and continue on. Luckily I had put most of my steely hard body, under my bike and therefore suffered minimal damage." End.
All I can say Mike, is it was lucky you were travelling so slow!

Rear brake usually does a great job of scrubbing off a few Ks mid corner without putting the bike off line. Just don't over do it
Duct Tail = body work along side and behind seat.

rear brake can also tighten yr line mid turn without washing off speed if you keep the throttle open! Old racr trick when yr bike won't steer, drag the rear!photomike666 wrote:Rear brake usually does a great job of scrubbing off a few Ks mid corner without putting the bike off line. And boys not to be pedantic, however it is a ducktail! As in Quack, Quack!

I'm a big fan of the rear brake I must admit, so much so I should probably get the disc fixed one of these days
Sorry to hear of the off Mike, glad you survived, cya on the weekend if all goes according to plan. Just hoping I don't get stuck at commonwealth Games....

Classic!
You may/ may not have over-braked there Mike, this sounds like a classic case of multiple "Bee Strikes" to me. Did you check that top box for wings and impressions. If a squadron of Victorian bees were crossing your path through the corner at an angle greater than 30 degrees to the perpendicular of your line of motion, several impacts on that HUGE BOX could well have supplied sufficient lateral force to break traction on your rear wheel. It's a lot more common than most people think.

I tend to use a bit of rear brake from time to time.Strika wrote:rear brake can also tighten yr line mid turn without washing off speed if you keep the throttle open! Mike .....your bike now has character. Not too bad on the damage front as far as crashes go.

Had a go with the T-Cut colour restorer, most of the scratches came out although some are a bit too deep to get out. The most noticable bit is the dent in the can.
