Mt. Glorious danger

Post by javaman »

Not sure where that place is but seems like a popular route. I think this post from OCAU deserves some attention :(

====

I had a good ride today even being solo.

The cyclists were giving me the shits as they were like a plague of locusts all over the mountain even at 5 am.

Any way the main reason for this posts was not to tell you about my ride but the F*#KING dangerous situation that someone was up to.

As i havent been on the bike for about 2 months I was a bit rusty and only cruising(luckily for me)

Becasuse some moran had tactfully placed small boarders(50cm in dia )across the road on the sweepers where Glourious opens up.

)......X......)
--)....X........)
---)..X..........) Nice piccy heh But you get the idea
----)X...........) X=rock
---).............)
--).............)

If I wasnt cruising I would of been a dead man.

I did a u turn and removed the rocks 25 in total over 4 sweepers.
That was my good deed for the day as not even 10mins later 2 R1's
blasted past like there was no tommorrow I belive I saved at least one of their lives(no it wasnt R1 forever as I didnt get showered in gravel)

Any way be careful out there people.

Lost a mate there on the 19th of Aug 2005, crashed n died instantly.

It is a popular route for some kids, and for them to crash too.
IMO it's a dangerous stretch, expecially so for newbies.

Shifty knows that stretch by the back on his hand, but I would say 90% of us here don't like that stretch.

The crash rate is almost one every weekend, and there's a tow truck on standby up there every week.

Was a nice day at willowbank but still a touch toasty.

Err locals in cars and pushbikes are a worry as are the plod, once you have done it a few dozen times or for a couple of years you get to know all the dodgy bits.....spose its like reefton with big cliffs for runoff....dont bother trying to dodge trees you will be airborne and looking like landing in the valley 300 meteres below.

Still a good ride though just too many plod.

Thats a fairly ordianary ACT for some Toe Cutter to do. Qudos to the guy who stopped & cleaned it up.
It should come witha dont try this at home warning imho. the Roads not that dangerous its proximity to the CBD, schools, plods, gravel run offs & mountain dweelers is.
Mind you Mt Mee is Worse & i try & avoid both like "Thai food" As they both fill my undies for all the wrong reasons.
If Mt. Glorious rd was at Kilcoy (some 45 mins further from the city) i would play there as well but ....... that aint gunna happen so i'll go west instead of north....... .

PS RG thanks for all the pics i've snatched over the last 12 months top stuff mate.

Cheers Brett

..... a shame.
but also on "Beryl's corner" (prolly more like S-10 Corner), I reckon whoever lives there makes sure that there is a constant supply of gravel to the road. I've been up there heaps, and there is ALWAYS gravel there (sure it is run off from this driveway, but... after I sweep it off and come back, so is the gravel!!)
ANYWAY- I know that some locals up there , for some reason or another, absolutely HATE the motorcycles. I've heard horror stories (up at Maiala Cafe and also that Nebo Tea House/Cafe joint- cuz I eat/drink more than ride! ) of wire/rope across the road and also similar rocks/timber/sleepers put in places for maniac riders treating the place as a race track.......
I reckon a lot of what I hear is trumped up hear-say (the roads get covered in debris after a rain, and it gets turned into lunatic locals trying to kill bikers  )
BE CAREFUL ONE AND ALL!!!!!! no one else is looking out for you....

Be wary this doesn't become an urban myth. These things tend to be blown out of proportion. We don't want another Cronulla up there but there are some shitstirrers about that would like nothing better than to see a full blown war up there. Some riders don't do us any favours by doing silly things up there that annoy the locals. In turn the locals have to accept that its just a public road, and our regos pay for it.

There's nothing wrong with MtG. Its just a twisty road with a nice cafe at the top. Thats all. Its not a marshalled racetrack. If you dive into a corner at speed without knowing the surface, you risk coming off. When lots of people come off it gets attention from the police. None of this is too surprising. Just take it easy up there, especially on weekends.

How is Mt Mee worse Brett ? :? I'll take mee any day of Mt G. I don't understand your reasoning behind that.

Bottom line it is a C*** act ....basically amounting to murder IMHO!

We are our own worst enemy, that's for sure. I joined a ride for another forum and went home before the first rest stop as most of them were out of their minds.

Sure I punt along at a reasonable pace through the twisties, but it's a rare occasion on which I'll go balls-out fast as the latter is where the problems occur... doing it less and less as time goes on and once I can afford some track days I'll get it out of the system where I won't have to fear nature (fallen leaves), locals (placing traps?!?!?!) and tourists (taking the whole road).

The more we can be seen as real people the better our chances of breaking, or at least improving, the stereotype.

I just checked the refidex, I actually meant Mount Nebo. I think Mee is the safest as it has less local traffic. Pity they wont open Lakeside back up, it may contribute to lessening any friction between locals & motorcyclists on the North Western side of Brisvegas.
