ZZR250 got knocked over...

Postby RG » Sun Jun 05, 2005 7:11 pm

My mate reverse his Hyundai Getz into my bike and landed it on it's right.
Other than a few scratches, these 2 are the more major damages.

ImageHow much do u think that will cost to repair?
I'm worried about glass particle getting into the engine as well.

ImageI've gotta get it chromed/recoated again, or else rust will attack it. I've seen ZZR wif rusty exhaust. And how much will that cost?

I am pretty sure that it is just an outer skin on the exhaust. Cut some welds and put a new cover over...mine hasn't gone rusty, so I don't think I'd bother fixing it. The oil window on the other hand...

I would have thought the oil window was built into the casing, if thats the case$$$$$$$$.
Unlucky pal, hope your mate had insurance, if he's gonna claim for you make it a good one and give him a back hander  (did I just tell you to make an over the top claim, sorry)
New can, new cover and a bit of paintwork sounds like a good claim.
Good luck

I've heard of someone else wanting to replace their oil window because theirs had become clouded and quite crappy. I think he was able to do it from the outside but im not really sure.

Just be very careful removing the glass and dont try turning it over, the area for the view window is semi seperated from the rest of the motor and has a thin gap for the oil level to come through, you might be lucky and not have any glas go through there. Drain the oil and use a thick oily rag to try and get any remaining shards out i guess. That is unless you want to take the motor apart to be sure it's ok (do you have to take the motor apart to replace that window anyway?)

He has insurance, but we hope to settle this privately, mates are mates. I'm willing to forget about the few scratches here and there.

Here is another pic.

Bad luck mate.

I just replaced my sight glass the other day. mine broke in my little stack.

It was pretty easy but i took my time.
I took the clutch cover off, but you could probably do it without doing so.
The sight glass is just jammed into the hole.

To take the clutch cover off.
Drain the oil
Unhook the clutch cable, It hooks into the silver hinge coming out of the clutch.
Then the silver hinge part just comes straight out. Pull it out and twist it if it wont until you get to the point where it will come out.
After that just take the screws off and pull the clutch cover off. It took a bit of force because the gasket had melded with the cover due to the heat.
Have your oil tray under the bike because a fair bit of oil comes out when you take it off.
Then just tap out the sight glass from the inside and put the new one in. Brighton kwaka recommended to use some silicon sealant when putting the new one in, apparently if you don't they can leak a bit. Just put a little bit of sealant around the outside and push it into the hole.
As i said the gasket was melded with the cover and engine, so I used a plastic scraper to get most of it off and a razor blade (again recommended by brighton) to clean up the last annoying bits.
Then new gasket on and clutch cover back on, rehook the cable and make sure it's the right tightness (the two bolts control that).
Easy.

You could do it in 30 minutes but i spent a fair bit of time on it, did it in my free time over two days (was paranoid about doing something wrong so took it easy) I put glad wrap over where the cover came off to keep anything getting into the engine.

Cost was about $16 for the sight glass and $15 for the clutch cover gasket.
Having done that I reckon you could probably just dig the broken sight glass out without taking the clutch cover off, but might be tricky. And the long way is more satisfying :D

Easy.
Tap it out? That easy?
Which 2 bolts? These ones beside the cable?

The bolts on the clutch cable, at either side of the bracket holding the cable onto the clutch cover.
What I would do is mark the cable where it lines up with the fairing bracket, then you just have to tighten it to get the mark lining up with the bracket again and it will be in the right place.
The bracket on mine had actually worn into the cable so I had that indicator for lining it up.

Yep just tap it out. It's not actually held in with anything other than the friction of the rubber shroud pusing out onto the case.

Ok, I get the idea. Should be a piece of cake.
I was thinking, since I'm at it, and with your good info. I might as well do an instructional(with pictures) 'Guide to changing the ZZR-250 engine oil peep window'

Bad luck mate how much damage did YOU do to the car after it got knocked over (just kidding) what a pain in the arse though, I woud be getting him to at least pay for the parts if you do it yourself and make him provide beer and BBQ for the planned day, (least he could do).

Good luck

Good question, in fact it'll probably cost more to repair his damages.
My left mirror left some nice red colour on his hatchback, and dented it in.
My side stand left a long scratch on the underside of his rear bumper. Of coz, part of my side stand broke.
