2011 ZX10R - Latest PCV/Akra Shorty Tuning

Postby valkau » Sun Jul 29, 2012 8:50 pm

Well it's done. Power Commander V plus Akra shortly and link pipe. DNA filter, Servo Buddy and O2 Optimser. Only picked it up Friday and haven't had a chance to really try it out but for a street bike around town, the sound is awesome - almost embarassing!

Horespower gain is the expected average of 5 although its's twice that in the mid range. What the tuner was impressed with was the gain in torque between 3,000 and 10,000 rpm. I've attached the dyno charts and look forward to your interpretations and comments. How do these compare with other results?

Hey Man looks good, i am just about to go through the exact same process on the 2012 10r so will be interested to see what i get out of it and i'll post it up.

Did your tuner use a map for each gear ? Or just stick with the one ? be interested to hear as dynojet recommend putting it in gear advance mode to avoid problems with closed loop operation but probably a pain in the A for the tuner.

Nice curve it's good to see the wavy power curve is there just like the Gen 3's. That is a very happy number Dyno :kuda:

To do the tuning per gear takes alot longer it's only a pain for the tuner if the customer doesn't want to pay. Also most Jap bike's are a pain now days due to Closed loop AFR feedback, Secondary injectors, dual rev range injectors (RSV4), variable power maps etc. it all just takes a bit longer to tune.

Yeah thats what i am hearing to just more $$$ and time. I was thinking about the SFM but will start with just the PCv by itself. If you do only have one map i would love to hear what it is like when it is in closed loop range 4-6th gear up to about 7500 and 20% throttle according to the dynojet 02 instructions ??

That dyno chart does look good :D :D very healthy HP, u got to be happy with that.

I got mine custom mapped, not cheap, and does take some time to do, bike used a tank and a bit of fuel to do, so it did spend some time to do, but it runs and pulls real good.

Anyone just banged the Map from the Power Commander website on and seen what happened for this setup ? They have one there with stock air filter Akro and link pipe .. probably for the US model be interesting to see. Be interested to see how far off tuned maps end up to what they supply.

Does it mono good? If not take back to tuner & fix!

That dip in torque @ 5-7 & 9-8k are they flat spots due to fueling and or timing?

You wouldn't probably wont feel that @ WOT, did they give you a print out of the AFR's (air-fuel-ratio)?

That's the better way of doing it and more applicable for road use, unless you plan on sticking in 4th or 5th gear @ WOT.

Flat spots are apparently due to pressure changes arising from the altered plumbing. The factory system manages this through the servo to even it out better. I'm using the stock headers with the link pipe and shorty and there's no management system for the pressure. A larger can would also change the outcome because it will change the length of the pipe. I understand the race headers are larger diameter and exaggerate the dips even more but race pros know how to manually compensate (I'm told).

The tuner felt that the PCV software was not on top of the latest ZX10R electronics as others have already indicated above. Forget about a standard fix straight from the box - it's individual crafting but worth it if you are patient. Ron at Flywheels knew it would be tricky and had the bike for 10 days so he wasn't under any pressure. It cost about $1,100 all up for PCV, O2 Optimser, Servo Buddy, DNA filter and tuning but it seems to be well worth it based on your comments. I think he's done well and was experienced enough to know it would be a demanding job.

I agree. Ron's very understated but know his stuff. I'll set out further details of the tuning tomorrow. He says the trick is to buy a genuine locally supplied PCV becasue the imported units always seem to be trouble - even if they're mean't to be thr right spec for Oz.

Glad to hear i have locally imported PCV and optimizer from serco. Maybe the problem is the recommended optimizer from the power commander web site is apparantley not right for Australian model ? Do you know what one you ended up with in yours ?

If my tuner was to comment, I'm sure this is what he'd say:

I was more than pleased enough with the improvement the one custom map had on the overall performance.
After I got the map right, I ran it in each gear and the a/f ratio looked good. Yours had a great result. Everything I did made a difference... cylinder trim, accelerator pump, 02 optimiser adjustment. It was very responsive.

I know bragging rights are sought after with gear tuning, but as mentioned before, we were able to get a big improvement from the custom map and tuning, and if you are happy with the way the bike performs then you are ahead. I have had people try and buy the PCV cheaper on Ebay (from the States) and no matter how much I adjust the map, there is no effect at all.

Individual gear mapping is only suitable for racers who have all the PC accessories for further performance like the secondary fuel module and the ignition module.
These two add-ons require some serious “gear-dependant” tuning. With the quick shifter too. And in the end, the benefit is an extra 4 horsepower (quoted by PC importers themselves). It’s an expensive task but 4 horsepower is a lot for a racer.

There is also an auto-tune module and a quickshift expansion module. I have found in the past thought, that overloading the poor little bikes with 4 add-on modules, never works in the favour of the customer. There are always complications with the sensitive circuitry and it is difficult to isolate the issue. Often when one of them fails, it causes the others to fail. Also in the past we have seen, particularly on the ZX10R, that the power commander and its add-ons can interfere with the stock ECU to the point of failure. Then you have big issues.

Hi Guys,

I think you can 'add on' and 're map' etc as much as you want to get that little bit of extra HP... but are any of you guys actually racing or at least tracking you bikes..?? Have you ever had it held at full throttle (to the stop) for more than 2 - 3 seconds when you are on the way down the straight..? because seriously, these bikes have a sh*t load of HP stock.. and not many (if any) of us would be able to handle the stock power anyway.. ;)

I agree that they do need some modifications to remove all the heavy stock stuff, and a few small race mods, but that is a given. This bike was designed to have a few small mods made and it is ready for pro-stock racing. So just my opinion, but all the gear by gear mapping etc I dont think you would even feel unless you where Stoner or Lorenzo..!! So if you are just riding around the streets, this would be a complete waste of time..? Hell the secondary injectors dont kick in till 6000 rpm, and in each gear that is even too fast for the standard roads... :?

Just my thoughts... But if you are happy to spend the cash, no worries.. 8)

Yeah Macca thats what i am thinking, Only going to get the mapping done to sort out anything the link pipe might do the fuel system. Simple PCV and 02 optimizer should be heaps for road and most track for me anyway.
I would be interested Valkau to see how your map ended up looking compared to what PC supply themselves for this setup, have you got the map and run it up in the software to see the + and - fuel adjustments ?

p.s Macca be coming to see you soon for some tyres and advice on them.

I agree about the power. My use is mostly road with occasional track so this has been totally indulgent - mostly following a dare by Madkaw at World Superbikes. The sound and the look without the cat box was the real objective and as Ron said, be happy with quite a surprisingly good outcome with standard PCV mapping (and a good tuner). I'm having a good look at the maps with him this week.
