Why not the Reefton Spur? It's probably the best learning ground you could get. Corner after corner after corner. You will only crash if you get your ambitions and abilities mixed up. A lot less dangerous than your morning commute with the tin tops let me tell you mate.
If you are a learner and find the Reefton too much of a challenge, then I beg you to sell your bike n go back to driving a car as obviously bikes are not meant for you!
