The 4th gets a new addition.......

Postby Gosling1 » Sat May 15, 2010 7:08 pm

Picked up a new bike today - one I have lusted after for many years........ :P :P

the one I collected is not quite in this condition  - but nearly everything is there, the bodywork needs some TLC, but by and large it should be a pretty easy build. Previously belonged to a member of cR down here, was bought as a 'project' bike, and now it has a new home in the 4th.

These rigs were never as popular as the GPz900R, the motor is basically identical to the 900R but bored and stroked out to 997cc. The frame is a steel 'perimeter' frame, its pretty big across the beam !! ...

This motor continued being used for many years after this model was discontinued. The ZX10 from 87/88 used the same motor, with some changes to the valve train and a lighter crank. This engine was upgraded again for the ZZR1100 with bigger valves and larger crankpins, but retained the 58mm stroke.

Plenty of work to do with this bike, the engine is complete but head is off, clutch basket has a couple of broken spring towers so this will need to be replaced. Lots of boxes of .....stuff.....to sort through. Should be lots of fun.... :kuda:

Yes mate, same colour as that. The fairing panels need the most work, the rear seat panel sections are all in pretty good nick.

One thing I will change if I can find the right bits, are to replace the stock 16" wheels with some 17" wheels from a GPz900R of around 1987/88 onwards. Much better range of rubber, and better handling as well.

You've probably got a manual for that I suppose...

I think I do have one kicking around somewhere mate .... ;)

Lots of reading to do though, as I was telling Corvus' old man today - I can do a build on an air-cooled Z motor in my sleep......but have never really gotten into this generation of motors. It should be a lot of fun !

cheers mate - yes, it was inevitable really

I wonder how many of the Z Rex mafia know that the origins of the motor in their bikes comes from this model ?

Nice pickup Gos - I quite like the GPZ range and the 1000RX is a nice bike. Looking forward to seeing pics :)

Yeah, I was thinking as I was reading your original post, when you mentioned the origins.........GpZ1000RX, ZX10, ZZR......and I am thinking ...and the ZRX...!!! Good to see you redeem yourself.

What all that means though, is it will probably have shitty cams like ALL those models have!!!! Go get Ivan to make some new ones while your doing the build and save yourself the grief later.
