was Wont Start - now it will!

Postby waynemorgan » Fri Sep 26, 2008 6:44 pm

Hi everyone,

First off - thanks for all the encouragement and suggestions as to why my GPZ was having problems starting.

First stop was eBay - searched for GPZ parts and found a gentleman selling loads of parts. Ordered a starter motor for $30. Installed it today and bingo! it's fine.

Learnt heaps about my bike at the same time - disconnecting the battery (under a fuse / junction box), removing the starter motor - tougher than I expected, installing the starter motor required removing the engine side cover, lining up the small cog to go onto the new starter and reassembling everything. Check everything is installed properly then hit the start button - excellent!

Couple of notes:
The left hand side bolt hole in the lower fairing is cracked and has evidence of repair on the inside - not sure of the best way to fix this.

After putting it back together I noticed the front left indicator seemed to be drooping - went to adjust it and it came off in my hand. Seems it was being held on by electrical tape. Have not looked more closely yet as to how to repair (or if its worth repairing).

Anyway, thanks again and I hope to get out on a group ride / coffee meeting soon.

Have a great weekend!

Cheers,
Wayne :D

better than dropping off while you're riding.

Hi Wayne

Well Done mate, was wondering how you were getting on with this, looks like you got it sorted without to much trouble.

Just a thought, it would be interesting to see if the brushes are ok in your old starter motor, might be worth a look and then you will have spare.

you can buy reasonably cheap after market blinkers on ebay, this might be an option or you could go down the road of Bling and put LED blinkers on front and back :P

good to see your back on the road! :D

Thanks for the encouragement guys,

Yes, I'm going to have the starter motor looked at and if serviceable I'll have a spare. Going to get flushmount LED indicators for the front and back and replace the tail / brake lights with LED's as well. Remove the fender and tidy up the bum end. I have a few things planned for it.

I also bought some plastic cement and fixed the broken lower fairing. Looks a lot better than it was - at least its attached to the bike now!

Since replacing the starter motor I've been riding as much as possible - still a few things to improve on but certainly more confident than I was a month ago.

The sig quote certainly is Pink Floyd - Brain Damage from Dark Side of the Moon. I live with depression and felt those words were appropriate for some of my darker days.

Cheers and have a great and safe weekend!

dark side was a brilliant album, but i preferred the wall and wish you were here above em. the wall is a tad self obsessed but hey i used to listen to it when i was 7 years old, love it.

Yeah - I like most of their albums. Love watching PULSE and cranking up the volume. Listening to A Saucer Full of Secrets right now.

Well it looks like my troubles aren't over yet - the battery is not being charged. I've tested the stator and it seems to be fine so suspect the regulator - which for some reason wont put out more than 13.2VDC. Guess I'll get a new regulator and try it.

Will keep you posted.

Cheers,

G'day mate,

Yeah - I'm off the road right now. Learners expired and couldn't get into a MOST - RTA are useless to deal with, even called Stay Upright and the mob who do it at Penrith but no openings so I have to re-do my "L"s again. Should have that done in the next couple of weeks.

Apart from that I'm replacing the stator on the bike - it's failed so not charging.

At least I'm learning how to fix it. Being 21 years old I know that it wouldn't be perfect when I bought it. It should be fixed before the end of the week.

So I won't be riding just yet but as soon as I'm on the road I'll give you a call.

I wont say good luck for the MOST - I'm sure you'll do well and pass no problems.

Cheers,
Wayne :D

Hi Dave,

I'm going into the RTA tomorrow to do my drivers knowledge test and the replacement stator is hopefully arriving tomorrow so I'm hoping to be back on the road on Sunday. 21 year old bikes are fun aren't they ;-) at least I can learn basic motorbike repairs / maintenance and it hasn't cost me too much.

Still needing plenty of slow speed practice at the moment. Might tee up a time for the following weekend to meet up and do some slow work with you if you're interested?

Cheers,
Wayne :D
