Performance improvements for 02 9R

Been quoted about $1400-ish for an Akra slip-on, air filter, jet-kit and all associated fitment labour and dyno work... is that a reasonable price? Seems like a fair whack to spend to me, that's all.

I've been advised by a few people (and read on a few US forums) that the 9R really needs those three things done at once - otherwise it just doesn't happen if you try and tune it smooth. I guess that makes for a rather expensive upgrade if it's done properly, but do ya reckon it's worth it?

My bike is otherwise stock at the moment, and runs pretty well (although it's jerky below 4000RPM), but you always wonder what a little more power would be like.

Tenog I have an '02 9R too. A Remus Slip on, K&N, Jet Kit & Dyno done before The SBK trip.
That price isnt a great one but its only a coupla hundred more then I paid all up.
I would'nt bother with the filter just remove the steel mesh from the OEM Filter does a better job apparantly.

You will enjoy the 6-10kg wt saving & the 6 - 12 HP though.

Or you could spend the money on a Koni Rear shock & Gold Valves in the forks & have a Much faster bike in the twistie stuff

A slip on, jetting mods and tune will get similar HP.
The air filter does nothing, as Brett said, remove the mesh from the stocker. I wouldn't bother too much with the jet kit for just a slip on and check with some our sponsors on slip on prices.
You should be able to get away with about 1/2 what you've been quoted.
MC performance seem well priced as do Superbike Supply...

grab an advancer while your at it, +4 degrees is nice locally they are about rrp$125 and a lot cheaper on ebay/from the states (likewise pipes and jetkits)

Just thought I'd update this on a quote I just got from Superbike Supply: $1050 for the Akra slip-on, delivered.

They call that a discount?

Does look like it's significantly cheaper to order from overseas, so I'll have to hunt around on eBay for a bit, methinks.

plenty of pipes for well under $300us, and several full systems under $600us get them to send you a +4 advancer and jetkit, shipping should be around $100us ... you could have all the go fast goodies you need for an extra 10hp at the wheel for around the same price as an akra slip on locally

Hmm, the picture looks better on my screen than it uploaded. Anyway, my mesh is pretty well stuck to the grey layer of filter medium. Removing the mesh started destroying the foam. How much collateroll damage should one be willing to accept? What about the rigidity of the filter without the mesh?? Presumably you keep the plastic grid... I can see a disentegration horror story in the making otherwise...

An OEM filter is about $60. Superbikesupply do the K&N for about $85... might go the K&N and do a straight swap and keep the OEM as a spare??



Just regarding the OEM filter, it's clearly not a paper filter. What do you guys do to clean it? Reverse blowing air hasn't done much for mine. Soak it in petrol then dry and reoil???

Get a K & N, otherwise you will be paying $60 for a new filter every time it needs servicing.

You can get a K & N cleaning and re-oiling kit from Repco for about $20-30

Matt, I totally get what you're saying, but since it's a foam filter, I'm thinking it's reusable.

If the weight of opinion on this site is what I think it is, most peeps have stayed away from the K&N and gone with the stocker mod... hence my question, how are they cleaning the filter. To be frank, I've never thought about this point till now. I've always paid for the replacement filter... stoooopid!

pretty much all kawasaki filters are foam, wash it with petrol or turps and oil it with filter oil

cant immagine why its stuck to the mesh, but you might have to rejet for a K&N

remove the white plastic grid.......the mesh stays
Wash it in soapy water (petrol will melt the foam !)leave to dry and re-oil it.......the dirty bits stick to the oil with any filter -- stock or K&N

Well, with a bit more gentle pursuasion the mesh came off. For whatever reason, the mesh was stuck around the edges. Luckily, the damage to the filter foam was limited.

The plastic grid is a sandwich to keep the foam in place, so I've put the filter back with the grid but without the mesh. I'm about to take the bike for a run so I'll see what difference has been made.
