I'll be honest, man - I'm still learning as well and you've gotta get some experience under your belt before worrying about making the thing quicker... it's a 250, after all.. not ever what you could class as fast (in a straight line, anyway).

As others have already said... maybe change the exhaust, paint some fairings and get an aftermarket screen (double-bubble if you're over 5'5" heh) and then keep it maintained so you can sell it when you go after your next REAL bike. Use it as a learning tool for cornering, stopping... everything - I love my ZX2R and I have a lot of fun with it but it's only preparation for the next thing.. the ZX6 or ZX9 or whatever lies down the track

Just work on your road skills and have fun - the more skilled you become, the more fun it becomes, 250 or not

You should get a power commander, marchiano rims, full muzzi exhaust system, K&N air filter, a rear reduction kit/mono seat conversion, custom paint job, gold valves in your suspension at the front, Hell braided lines front and back, replace the rear suspension set with a full ohlins race suspension kit... Then get it tuned and dynod...

Dont forget, a double bubble screen, weight reduction work and a full set of dianese leathers

Then when you sell it in a year you can get probably at least an extra $500 for it

Even though I am on my Learners, I am a semi experienced rider, as I have had a bike overseas and ridden in extreme conditions (Bangkok's traffic). I’m not so much talking about making it a speed machine, but simple things that can be added to the bike for a couple of hundred bucks. E.g. Brakes, tyres and other small things. I can’t do track days and stuff so I’m looking for road tyres.

Flush mount front bliners, and mini rear blinkers(bout $50 for both)

Slip on muffler, so it sounds like a bike, not a wipper snipper(bout $350)

cut the rear mudgaurd where the number plate mounts down a bit, free.


Not much else to do then, will sound better, look better.

Then save ya cash for a bigger bike.

I wouldnt bother with a slip on, if you're lucky enough to find one second hand, you'll still be paying a couple hundred bucks for it.

Pull your stock can off, find a 3-4' steel or wooden rod and stick it in the big hole of your can, take a hammer and beat the f*ck out of said pole till you dislodge the center baffle and it falls back out the big hole.

Replace can on bike and presto, you have yourself a free slip-on.

It doesnt sound shit like the CBR250's either, for $0, I'd actually say it sounds good, and it's not overly loud.

Dont waste your time with blinkers either, fair enough the stock ones are ugly, but they do the job just as well as some pissy flush mount ones will.
Jeez, if you were into cars I'd bet you'd have a Lancer with neon lights


Try not to forget, it's a 250, while it may be your pride and joy it's still just a stepping stone. Use your money and your time with this bike to become a better rider, not a better looking one.

Ok, so I've taken the muffler off and all I can see is another hole about halfway down and something solid all around it... which bit is the 'baffling'?

The 'somtthing solid' is the baffle you want to remove. You'll need a fairly long rod about 1cm thick, try putting it in the outlet of the exhaust, push it as far in as it will go. The end of the rod should be touching the top of the baffle you want to take out. Smack the other end of the rod with a hammer and you will dislodge the baffle out of place,
It's only held in by all the other metal and insulation wrapped around it, once you've f*cked it up enough it will fall out completely.

If you're just after the sound you can just bend the top of the baffle enough to let some exhaust pass, you'll get your noise and you wont be hammering and swearing so long.

Dont expect any decent increases in performance, the ONLY difference I have noticed is that it frees up a tiny bit of top end power, I'ts given me a 7kmh higher top speed.

Its a personal choice, i did the small blinkers on the zx2r cause i wanted to, muffler as well.


Ive also got a R1 thats got flush mount blinkers, rear LED blinkers, polished rims etc. YEah, its blinged, but who cares, i dont like stock stuff.
As for what car i had, it was a 200sx that was a drift car, certainly not a show pony lancer.

tell me a little more on these slip on mufflers, don't have my bike yet as it arrives tomorrow , but i am just interested, do the stock mufflers just unbolt and u can bolt a new one on ?
