just announced

and imho..done without thinking about it
this is plain dumb, becoz I have entered the tunnel
and been caught behind a truck in the (yr choice of lane)
that struggles along at 50kmh especially in the
uphill part

and now..you can't change lanes?
and trucks can continue to drive in whatever
lane they farkin' well feel like..at whatever speed
and
what if someone breaks down..as happens most days
you can't drive around 'em?
like
A truck in the middle lane lost a front wheel last week
and it took 2 hours to clear..so ppl entering in that lane
can't change lanes for 2 hrs?
STOOPID!

comments you lot...pleeze

Bracks announces Burnley tunnel changes
Leo Shanahan The Age
April 19, 2007 - 12:58PM

Steve Bracks has announced that cars will no longer be able to change lanes in the Burnley and Domain tunnels in the wake of last month's fiery pile-up in which three people died.

In direct response to the crash, the State Government and VicRoads today announced a raft of changes affecting the way drivers will behave in Melbourne's tunnels.

Earlier this week, at the beginning of an inquest into the deaths, Victorian coroner Graeme Johnstone said any necessary improvements should be made immediately, without waiting for his official recommendations.

"After the Burnley Tunnel accident, we sought advice from police and VicRoads . . . the advice we received was very clear," Mr Bracks said.

"The way people drive in the tunnel needs to change. The biggest risk drivers currently take is weaving through traffic and making unnecessary lane changes."

Within the next 12 months Mr Bracks has pledged to ban lane changes in the tunnels, with a loss of three demerit points and a fine of $182.

Other changes to the tunnels will include:

▪ Installation of emergency barriers at tunnel entrances to stop drivers entering after a serious accident has occurred
▪ Lowering the speed limit on the approach to the Burnley tunnel from 100 km/h to 80 km/h to the West Gate bridge, to give drivers more time to correct their lane
▪ Expanding use of variable speed signs on the approaches to tunnels to speed
▪ Re-drafting learner-driver handbooks to include a section on safe driving in tunnels
Mr Bracks said he was happy to "start the process" immediately.

He said he did thought truck-only lanes would not have been appropriate.
"It would not have been practical and achievable."

Why the FARK NOT..???
It works in Europe in the tunnels

Wasnt one of the truckdrivers on the mobile phone to his boss
at impact. Id have thought a truck lane at 60kmh would have
done more for minimising risk. Only spent a year down there
but the speeding tailgating semis on that freeway (M1?) are something
else.

Yeah very stupid. We've got a no lane change tunnel on the M2. It's only a tiny bastard but as soon as twats get in there they suddenly lose their ability to travel at the speed limit. I'd hate to get stuck behind something in the Burnley tunnel.

If they are going to do that there should be a rule about travelling at less then the speed limit in the outside lane

And it probably has more crashes in it than any other tunnel in Sydney! although maybe the M5 is worse but a HELL of a lot longer!

I traveled that tunnel just 2 days before the big crash. It simply is not a place to be for bikes. Long, winding (poor visibility), and not enough exit route if shit happens. And if the traffic crawls it gets really hot, damp, and stinky in there.

That proposal would just another reason not to go there. Unfortunate for commuters who use it daily though.

i dont think people should be changing lanes in tunnels.
they are too stupid to be able to do it safely.
and who can blame them - there is far too much other stuff to worry about when driving your car eg sending/receiving text messages, watching your on board dvd player, eating your lunch. with all these things to do who could possibly spare any attention to safely control their motor vehicle

whats the difference between changing lanes in a tunnel and changing lanes on a freeway at night ??!?!?

Lets just ban changing lanes all together.

Thats what I say.

That is seriously fucked-up !! I mean, they charge you for using a shitty tunnel in the first place, then stop you changing lanes........so now, as soon as some truckie hits the picks, you will have rear-enders all the way back up that lane ??

and they don't expect people to change lanes to avoid a collision ???

What a bunch of cock-spankin' monkeys you have running the roads down there....

a new press release from Vicroads...........
Changing lanes in the tunnels will be banned, and drivers who ignore the rule will lose three demerit points and be fined $182.

Most of the road rules are knee jerk stuff
it shits me to tears.

some arsehole drives his car into a tree and kills himself so we all cop a speed reduction on that piece of road because ACA and TT get out there saying what a tragedy it is and that "something must be done".
they dont take into account the fact he had been driving like a f***wit.

basically in this country it seems we have to cater for the lowest common denominator at all times.

Well thats the end of my rant. sorry bout that its just that politicians really shit me.
