Cake is defined by usually being sweet and are baked not fried and normally served as a dessert. The potato SCALLOP is none of those.

I can only assume you come from Mid/Northern England. Were you from 'Down South' and spoke posh Queen's English then it would be Ca(r)stle and Ba(r)th etc.

The difference is similar to the differing pronunciation of a.b.c (primary school) and the more adult (A.B.C).

I'm not Turkish or Greek, and there may be a differentiation between the two, but they taste the same to me (and much better than potato cakes).

I wondered when the *fish cake* would enter the argument !!!! I think its generally accepted everywhere, that a mass of fish offal, processed in a blender, then crumbed and fried - is obviously a CAKE, but flattened spuds, battered and fried - can in no way be called a CAKE !
