I should add, so that nobody gets the wrong opinion, is that I agree with Dutchys comments.

I work in an industry on a maintenance team, and day in, day out I see the same few people (not all of them) damaging or operating a machine incorrectly, because they think they know how to do it better. No matter how many times your patient with them, show them the correct operation of a machine, they still think they know better, and its this mentality that gets annoying.

So I can understand what Ardy is saying, when time and time again the message to slow down and be careful (something that should be common sense) is being put out there, and certain people (not all of them) just dont listen to the message. And its people like the Police, SES, firey's and ambo's that have to clean up the mess, and come to the rescue of the ones that didnt listen to the message in the first place.

And its the unfortunate ones like the kids, and the other innocent partys involved in the accident that suffer also.

Keeping in mind there are the accidents, which are just that "An Accident" something that cannot be avoided and is caused by some sort of unforseen circumstance.

About one in 20 road deaths is directly attributable to speed, so why do we hear nothing but the brainwashing mantra, "slow down"?

Take note that I said slow down and "be careful" and I think that being careful is just as important as slowing down.
We should all drive according to the road conditions and make a choice as to what is the best and safest way to drive, taking note not to break any laws.
For example, you would be safer driving at 111kph on the freeway between Bendigo and Melbourne than you would be driving through the black spur or reefton spur at 111kph, in other words you would drive according to the road conditions.

It was noted. But you can still be careful without falling for the whole 'slower is safer' bullshit. Its the ones who aren't careful that are crashing, not the ones who keep getting snapped by revenue cameras - otherwise there'd be nobody left to photograph.

So are we going to get all upset about the 5 dead in Melbourne last night? probably not, there weren't any little kids in it ... AND they were speeding. So all we'll get from this is more kneejerk 'slow down' propaganda. Somebody was obviously doing something he shouldn't - mostly not paying attention, but possibly pissed, stoned, talking on the phone, adjusting the doof doof, looking in the bushes for a greed camera? ... who knows - all we will be told is that he was speeding. When they find out what really caused it, will the epilogue be splashed all over the headlines? I think not. THAT is a failure to communicate.

Assistant commissioner Tim Cartwright says he is frustrated by the tragedy.

"This is just crazy. How many times do we have to say to people speed kills?" he said.

"This isn't speed, this is lunacy.

"There's suggestions of earlier erratic driving. The witnesses we've got give us every indication this is just one person driving in a stupid manner that's resulted in this.

"There's at the moment no suggestions of drag racing, there's no oncoming traffic, two lane road, perfect conditions. What can you say? I'm just speechless really."

Speed was a contributing factor. It is any crash where a vehicle was moving, whether you like it or not.

I think we all get the "speed doesn't kill" bleating that some of you continue to spew out. The message isn't really that "speed kills". That's just their catchy little phrase to try and sell the "slow down" message. Why do they want to sell the "slow down" message? Because when one of the other contributing factors (inattention, due care, fatigue etc) results in a crash, then quite logically, the faster you were traveling at the time, the more likely you are to be dead when the vehicle has finally stopped.

How about "Coke adds life"? Do you really think they are trying to get you to believe that Coke really adds life? No, they are trying to sell a product - in this case, Coca Cola. In the Government's case it's the "slow down" message.

If speed was really a killer, then all the MotoGP riders would be dead - every time they went onto the track. Are they more likely to die if that come off at 320km/h, or around a 40k/h corner? Why are the Grand Prix Commission always trying to bring in new rules to make the bikes slower?

And Daisy, for the record, I'm upset that 5 young lives were lost because someone, probably the driver, fucked up. It makes me sick in the stomach to think that some poor bastard just lost their child in such a tragic way.

but the speed thing is insulting to the intelligence, so why not make the catchphrase "WAKE THE FUCK UP WANKERS"

Nobody disagrees with this. We disagree with the gumbyment obsession that removing speed from the equation somehow magically fixes the driver stupidity. We disagree with the police being nothing but a mouthpiece and strongarm for the gumbyment.

Again the obsession. I think some of you are actually starting to believe your own propaganda. Try a new message. "Drink, drive - bloody idiot!" was a good one. We know it to be true. "Speed kills" is bullshit. Stop treating all of us like fools and concentrate on the ones that are. Perhaps giving them licences wasn't such a good idea ay? Perhaps leaving them on the roads when its blatantly obvious that they can't drive isn't a good idea? No grubbyment wants to tackle that though, for two reasons. 1. They believe there are no votes in it. 2. It doesn't raise revenue.

EXCESSIVE speed - INAPPROPRIATE speed, will kill you. Trouble is, if you only have half a brain, any velocity at all can be deadly.
