Mate, long time no speak, I see you've been getting some bullsh*t answers mate so i'll have a go for ya, firstly the dents in the side of the tank are for your knees, watch the pro riders, and ask yourself, why do they use them they're not just for looks, lets look at it like this, here's a left turn, put your right knee into the dent, hang your arse off the left side of the bike, remember that you are now sitting your upper leg, not your arse on the seat, hang your left knee out and lean into the curve it feels weird at first as you feel like your gonna fall off but you'll get used to the feel of it, do this at slower speeds then increase speed as your confidence builds, the purpose of hanging off the thing in the first place, and anyone who can do it properly will tell you, is that if you lean into a corner on the bike seated in a normal seated position and lean as far as the tyre allows( no chicken strips) this decreases your ability by 100% the ability to avoid any mishaps that may occur, rodents, little kids, cars, too fast into a corner, by hanging off the bike you are not leaning the bike over as far as it can go and gives you that extra bit of tread, or chicken strips, to use to avoid said mishaps it also allows you to go around the same corner faster and cleaner than you would if you were seated in the normal position, looks cool too and if you need some video instruction PM me for some very interesting DVDs, now for the funny part of all my instuctor write ups: Worse comes to worse my friend hang your tripod out, put some wheels on it and lean on that sucka :D :D
Regards

by hanging off the bike your moving the bikes centre of gravity further into the turn, thus making the bike turn sharper without leaning over any further

Interesting theory Les. I still believe the bike has to be leant over first before knee dragging is possible though.....

Your theory about hanging off is kinda true. But I use hanging off the bike a different way. That is.......I sit in the centre of the seat 99% of the time, and then IF i run into any Furry animals/children/gravel/obstacles, I slide off the inside of the bike and utilise my body position to it's fullest effect when neccesarry.

Personally I think if you are riding a modern sports bike on the road and hanging off all the time, you are probably riding too fast.

G'day Strika, I agree with you mate, you still have to lean the bike but not to the degree where you have used all of the tyre, as for the reference to the furry creatures and such, that was supposed to be taken in the context of being in a curve and already leaning the bike over, it's a manouver I use if i'm on unfamiliar roads and if I have gone in too fast I have an out, if you were to hang off the bike all the time not only would it be extremely uncomfortable but downright dangerous as the bikes center of balance would have been shifted offside making an emergency manouver to the opposite side you were on nearly impossible, you would also look like a real dickhead, as for going too fast, wll we're all guilty of doing that, sometimes it's just the perfect day when you just know all is well in the universe and the perfect sweeper is coming up and you go in to the bend a tad over the recommended speed hanging off the side and you feel your knee slide on the bitumen, there's nothing like it.
If your stupid enough to do it on every corner you come across then stupid is the rider doing so as it is unnecessary and can be dangerous, leave it for those ride days on the track or when you are sure a manouver like this will not place you or those you are riding with in danger.
