Some pass some others thicken the shell, I dont really care as long as they pass.

Let me pretext this question before statrting an all out war.

I am not intending on buying a helmet OS to use on the roads, just curious.

So with that said the extremely strong aussie dollar had me trowling some bike accressory sites ( well until my credit card jumped out of my wallet and ran out of the room screaming 'make the bad man stop' like a little girl ) and I noticed how much we get reamed for helmets over here.

Anyways with the change inlaws recently regarding to the AUS/NZ 1628 stickers I was wondering what the OS helmets have (either US or Europe).

Can anyone shed some light?

I am curious about this -- what law change is that ? I have heard of nothing.

Absolutely correct - I know of one leading brand that needed to do this to some of their european models to pass AS1698 - hence why I say the overseas models are not always the same as the ones we have here

Last year the law widen allowing other testing/certifying bodies to supply the AS1698.

SAI global is not the sole supplier anymore.

you also have TUV Global and a few others now.

I can advise that the opening of certification to other companies drove down the cost of certification greatly -- had TUV not been in the market place I could not afford the cost of certification

TUV and BSI for example drove the price down by double figure percentages --- in fact I will not say how much but SAI globals cost was absolutely slashed by TUV

Let me explain how much of a rort SAI global was running and why I dislike them - it may give you an insight as to why helmets cost more here as well


to certify helmets the factory where they are produced in must also be inspected yearly and certified - for quality control etc ( part of or standards requirement )

when I originally approached SAI they said to me I have to pay ( yearly ) for one of their people in Australia to fly business class and stay for 5 days in a 5 star hotel to do the certification of the factory overseas --- remember SAI Global says they have offices all over the world in most countries -- keep this in mind

I rang TUV - they said to me -- we get our local office in that country the factory is in to inspect the factory and do the report for us after they have been there and checked relevant things -- it should only take a day to do the inspection and depending on where the office is all you pay for is their basic travel cost ( if a flight - economy or economy train ticket etc etc )

Makes you wonder, I can't wear my Suomy Vandal which has US DoT and British DoT standards sticker for a trackday at Qld Raceway but some $59 Chinese made p.o.s Nitro brand with an AS1628 is OK ?????

Why can't you wear it for track day? I thought for racing (at least) that you could use whatever helmet you wanted.

At EC and PI they don't check the lid, the last time at Wakefield they didn't, thus the question, now I know when I go to QLD with a new helmet I will have to take a spare.

I had heard there was an issue at the drags but commonsense prevailed and they allow non AS/NZ approved.

I bet if Rossi or Stoner showed up they would say no worries

Oran park used to check your lid but DOT and SNELL Were ok... Ec will soon i bet.
