Static electricity is not necessarily discharged through rubber sole. It is highly unlikely that a person can generate static from a bike as normally the static happens by rubbing against synthetic products like rubber (balloons typical example of how to generate it) however static is easily discharged by touching metal objects.

The problem arises when a person goes back to the car to get in slides past the seat generating static and then goes back to the filling point and discharges the electricity at the filling point.

When it comes down to it, store policy dictates whether you sit or stand, its like a store asking to search your bag when you leave, you may not like it, but its a condition of entry into the store, so you either do it or don't go back. For the servos who require you to stand, you either stand or dont fill up there, simple, as far as a random telling you while you're filling up, i'd say thanks and do as i want, personally i stand, but i'd never begrudge others thier choice.....

It's one way or the other with you lot. Why don't you spice it up a little and try some variety, like filling it from behind. ;)

Live On The Edge - fill your bike WHILE SEATED ! If you have never done anything as exciting as this, you may very well get a chubby from doing so.

Ah it all becomes clear now, if Gos says so it must be true, good for him!

Just to put this to bed, in a previous life I was a tanker driver for mobil, static can only be caused by Diesel not by petrol.
Petrol VAPOUR has a very low flash point 43cel and is heavier than air " petrol does not burn Vapour does" ie: sit on ya bike, fill ya tank, vapour cascades down over the engine area " engine hot = balls of fire and nowhere to run!
chances of this happening = rare"..... if it does it will blow you off your bike, burn all oxygen around you & you wont be able to breathe, & if you have your helmet off you will have 3rd degree burns on your skin " all in 2 seconds"
Only a Motorcyclist knows why a dog rides with his head out the car window

WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG, I test petrol pumps for part of my living and have done so for 20 yrs... Petrol has a very high flash point, static IS/CAN be caused by a number of things not the least the fuel itself swishing around. Yes the stand is a very good earthing device. I have seen the results of static fires on Servos and some caused by people getting in and out of cars whilst filling up.

But the Idea is really that if anything does go up in flames whilst you are ON the bike, it's the fact you are on the buggar and holding the bike and not in a very good position to save yourself and the surrounding evironment ie; the petrol station and you.

We are all lazy barstards so we'll do what we want but if I see a rider sitting on a bike whilst I'm working I'll say something.... But I have been known to sit on the bike while I'm filling up cos I'm freakin lazy....

Cheers

Tape - I have heard that you can throw a lit match into a full container of petrol.............and it will simply go out.

Any truth in this ? Not something I am likely to try at home....

umm NO.!!

The story is you can put a cigarette in container full of petrol... A flame will ignite petrol... a smoulder, ie, cigarette, may not..

the tale is of the machanic sitting out the front of his workshop on a windy afternoon and putting his ciggy out in the small pan of petrol, the wind keeps the vapours moving (the stuff most likely to catch fire) and the small embers on the end of the ciggy are put out by the petrol...
