yea mike they often give u options..like "easiest" route, or "quickest" route.... sumtimes easy ends up being twice as far as quick tho...

i use the shortest/quickest all the time

if it is peak hour then i use shortest , it takes you through all the backstreets , have seen so many places i didnt know existed but keeps you off the main roads and out of the traffic

non peak hour go for the quickest and it takes the main roads

Interesting topic and something i do for a living as a rd surveyor. As an aside to this i just got back from mapping the vic high country for sensis who own all the rd centreline data in au. So you will now get the right rds (most of the time) if you use a Tom Tom. The rd data for these units (any Brand) is still no where near complete but in the cities they are about 98% bar rd works that are being done at this moment etc. If you have a windows based mobile a gps receiver is the cheapest way to go as i can (ahem) get you the tom tom softwear with current maps on "special" for nix. You can use voice via bluetooth or plain old wired headset. I finds this really useful on the bike as i don't want to keep looking down to see the screen and a separate gps is just another thing to carry when i have my phone on me all the time
