I had a XJS V12 '80 model, bought it as a 12yo car, everybody said nothing but problems, only 2 things went wrong in 8 years. The turbo 400 auto shit it self and the power steering pump went out to lunch, both made by General Motors. Great car, smooth like silk, ended up giving it to my daughter.

Re: Pimp My f'n Shag-Waaaah Baby !!!
there are some pics of the Shagwah at the beginning of this thread - I haven't yet slipped the motor/trans into the body as I am still waiting on the high-pressure power steering hose to be made up. The power-steering hoses need to be fitted to the rack first - then the powertrain can be bolted up.
Will be bunging up pictures of this as soon as its fitted

Re: Pimp My f'n Shag-Waaaah Baby !!!
bit more progress with the old girl over the weekend.....
Got great pedal pressure with the brakes - eventually - after the reconditioned m/c was fitted. Used some high-end Castrol brake fluid and started at the back (as you do) - with the inboard rear discs, getting to the bleed nipples was pretty straightforward. Daughter #2 in the pilot seat, doing the pump-pedal-and-hold routine - the rear brakes bled up quickly. Moved to the front passenger side - all things looking good. pedal pressure now impressive...........get to drivers side front - and no fluid at all coming from bleed nipple ?
Remove nipple entirely - nothing. Remove small section of steel brake tube from union with rubber hose - still nothing. Get the shits, go to major brake-line split-fitting in engine bay - undo completely - use compressed air to blow rubber line clean - still nothing !!! The air-duster kept popping off the fitting - which indicated a completely blocked rubber section.........
So its time for a bit of a prod with some wire. Only get in the rubber line maybe 50mm - and complete stop. Gave it some loving - and eventually it cleared - with some WD40 and more compressed air. Not sure why only 1 brake line was blocked like that - but it did mean I got up close and personal with the massive 4-spot brake calipers fitted to these rigs
FMD they are fucking massive - each piston is around 45mm diameter - the overall length of the calipers is 250mm .....no wonder they didn't bother upgrading the brakes when the V12 was fitted.
I will probably upgrade both the front rubber sections with braided, once rego has been sorted.
The last job left for the gearbox/motor being bolted together, was the flywheel to torque converter bolts. These went in this arvo, so that pretty much completes the motor/box setup. I also fitted the new starter motor. Just waiting on the power steering hoses now.......next job will be to fit up the new sump. Its a shame this will be almost completely hidden from view once the motor is installed.......its a really nice piece of work.

Excellent progress.
Are you using the original steering rack?
Either way, when you fit your extractors, make sure to run some heat shielding over any parts (mainly rubber boots etc) that are in the vicinity of the extractors.
My LS1/extractors were notorious for melting the power steering rack boots. They get pretty flappin hot, so do anything close you can see while you can get in there easily.

Re: Pimp My f'n Shag-Waaaah Baby !!!
cheers
Yes, the original steering rack will be used. According to the conversion specialist - the Jag power steering works well with the LS1 pump. The rack has now had all new bushes fitted, which took out a lot of play.
Thanks for the tip on the rack boots - yes, with everything currently out of the bay, it will be heaps easier to put in some shielding now instead of later. Old mate who is doing the extractors is really looking forward to this job - although apparently there will be some tight clearances on the drivers side to clear the steering linkages......
Maybe some exhaust wrap could also help in this instance ?

If it is close to the linkages only, I wouldn't bother too much. But anywhere near the boots or anything else that will melt, for sure.Gosling1 wrote:cheers![]()

Are your extractors going to be nice and shiny, or coated. I bought my pacemakers coated as it cuts down a fair bit of heat. If they are going to be shiny for bling, maybe just wrap the bottom sections that are around the steering rack, and leave the parts you will see from the engine bay. They are also notorious for melting the power steering seals in the rack and letting fluid out. So it pays to be pretty vigilant about it.
I used stuff like this, and just cut to suit the power steering rack an fixed it in place. Your exhaust guy will more than likely have this stuff, and will do it for you in the fitment. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DIY-Aluminum ... 1398837376
This thing is going to be a weapon, and looking forward to seeing the outcome.

Re: Pimp My f'n Shag-Waaaah Baby !!!
had another look at the location of the rack boots - they are reasonably well-positioned, being down low and immediately behind the back of the k-frame.....especially the drivers-side boot as this has the steering linkages directly over the top. May need something for the passenger side - but it really depends on how old mate decides to route the exhaust........the engine bay is pretty big in these rigs so there is a shit-tin of room for him to play in
Not sure about shiny or coated yet - I will run with whatever he recommends. Like the look of that heat protection stuff .....
Have decided to go a slightly different way with the high-pressure p/s hose after talking to the EnZed crew today. It looks like we are going to go with a stock LS1 hose - Kelpro HPS068 if anyone is interested
- and just modify the hose at the rack end to suit the Jag OEM tubing/fitting into the rack. Really easy mod and this then routes the high-pressure hose along under the block - identical to stock GMH positioning. This approach will keep the engine bay a bit tidier and also should ensure no issues with the power-steering hose being located too close to the headers (as it probably would have if we had just gone with a long length - 1200mm - of high-pressure rubber hose).
I reckon it will be a real weapon as the new motor puts out around 30% more hp than the V12 - with only 50% of the weight !

note .. never use exhaust wrapGosling1 wrote:......

unless you like replacing your extractors/headers every year or 2 that is (as I found out to my cost)
It is better to shield stuff.. whatever you want to protect instead of using exhaust wrap
(as the headers rot out and crack at the welds.. even with stainless pipes)
GOTTA LUV the 12R!!

OK thanks Yoda, will take that on board. Hopefully old mate exhaust builder will just keep the header pipes a good 30+mm away from the rack boots - shouldn't be too hard the engine bay is pretty big
