I've worked with a few female mechanics in the car industry, One was top notch, excellent technician, the others were very average, wouldnt let the gap a set of plugs on a dato 120y, let alone service my bike.

All i can say to anyone wanting to be a mechanic of anysorts, its a dirty, stinky, messy job, your hands always look like crap, you will get sick of looking at other peoples pretty toys, and bosses usually only care about one thing and one thing only, the mighty dollar.

You'll have to start off as an apprentice, crap money, always doing the crappy jobs, gettin lunches everyday, cleaning up other peoples mess blah blah blah.

But in saying all that.......after all the crappy years, i now have a pretty good job, well paid and pretty damn cruisy. I've learnt some invaluable info, and saved myself a ton of cash in car repairs, and made a few bucks doin odd jobs here and there.

All i can say id if ya want to do it, get round to all the bike shops, speak to the service manager and run the idea passed them, even offer to come in for free on saturdays if there open, or a day you have off regularly, and learn the basics, and it will show them how quickly you pick things up, and they get a free slave  and you will soon see if you want to make it a career. Its better than getting stuck in a 4yr apprenticeship and hating it after 12months like i did :?

Be all right for girlies if its light stuff all the time like servicing bikes but once you get to swinging gearboxes over your head and pulling out diffs its a boy job mostly unless your a fairly solid sort of a lass.

Cant see why girls couldnt do bikes its just a matter of being a bit particuler with certain things.

it isnt that hard, pulled many a gearbox out of old hj-hz kingswoods and tailshafts are fun...

just use the equipment available and be smart about how your going to do it..

remember your not made of steel but there are things which are and should be used, eg jacks...

i was signed up for mechanical engineering at uni then changed to civil then to pe teaching then nursing..
still not sure if i have made the right decision, but hey im young and if i decide that im not happy i will change.

so go for it do what your heart tells you to do...

Good advice!

...just wish I'd followed it 24 years ago BEFORE I joined the Army and wasted 78 months of my life. Followed by 4 months at Ericsson, 66 months at AAP Communication, 97 months at Reuters and 43 months at the NAB .

Fark me, now I'm depressed...

I would leave my bike with a female, my father is a mechanic and at age 16 I done an Automotive course and built motors etc. I also have built Big Block Chev's with the ex for our show cars and done all the wiring alone to hide it. Changed the motor in my old Sigma alone and have played with many of cars. Of late thanks to Les even managed to change my own Sprockets and Chain on old Kermie. I was in the Automotive trade for ages and yes I would trust a female just as much as a male so go for it :D :D

Actually, that's not really fair, I did really enjoy fiddling around with electronics 24 years ago (and still do). It's just that I haven't done much of it since I left Ericsson 8).

I am not sure how it works up your way but check the TAFES and see about doing a course first always comes in handy. Good luck and follow your heart :D

um no.... though lainie may be able to help you with some adult products..

do the pre apprenticeship course, if its available, my brother just did it and said it was very helpful and he had previously done 1 year at uni in mechanical engineering...

go for it hunny. tell your dad it will work out cheaper cause you can service his bike for him...
